It’s time to celebrate the small wins! Many parents tell me how worried they are when their children won’t eat new foods and as a parent myself, I GET IT! But often we overlook the small wins that are happening at the table feeding your kids is about progress not perfection!... Remember that frustration you feel when your child puts a new food in her mouth and then spits it out? Well that my friends, this is progress your child is exploring and tasting it. They’re using their senses to figure it out! Accepting a new food can look like: 1. Allowing it on their plate 2. Smelling it 3. Touching it 4. Playing with it 5. Tasting and spitting out Pro tip: Keep a napkin handy for hesitant/picky eaters to spit out food if they want. This will make them feel safe that they can explore without pressure to eat. Remember, your value as a parent doesn’t depend on your child trying a new food! If you are wanting more guidance so you can help your child to overcome picky eating, decrease stress at mealtimes and support their growth, apply for coaching using the link in my bio @eat2grow.kids.nutrition. I am currently taking on new clients. . . . . . . . . . #whatifeedmykid #whatifeedmytoddler #whatifeedmykids #whatifeedmyfamily #kideats #familymeals #momprobs #smallwins #pickyeaters #picky #pickyeating #pickyeater #pickykids #toddlermama #toddlermommy #toddlermomproblems #honestmommin #parenting101 #parentinghacks #momhacks #parentinglife #toddlermeals #toddlerlunch #feedingkids #preschoolers #feedingmyfamily #dadsofinsta #parentingishard

6 Truths about how your kids might eat over the holidays! Parents, repeat after me: IT’S OKAY IF THEY ONLY EAT THE DINNER ROLLS! Our expectations of what our kids will eat at holiday meals is often NOT what ends up being the reality.... Holiday meals are filled with new foods they see only once a year, mixed dishes, different eating schedules and the pressure to sit for longer than usual. These new meal patterns can bring up big feelings for a child who is a picky eater. Here are a few tips that will help get you through those holiday dinners: 1 Try to adjust your expectations! It’s ONE meal or ONE day of eating it won’t make or break their overall nutrition. 2 Include at least one ‘safe’ or ‘familiar’ food at the table for your hesitant eater. Yes, this means having chicken nuggets along with turkey if that is the case. 3 If you get unwanted comments about your child’s eating, you can say: We let our child choose what they want to eat from the food offered and they don’t have to try new foods today if they don’t want to. 4 If your holiday dinners consist of several courses, (like ours do) don’t expect your kids to sit for the entire meal. Many kids have a ‘time limit’ for sitting at the table. Have activities ready for them to do while the rest of the family is still eating. 5 Don’t make them ‘earn’ their dessert by having ‘one more bite’ or cleaning their plate. Most importantly, focus on the conversation and making memories versus about how much your child eats! Wishing all of my American friends a happy, safe and healthy Thanksgiving weekend!

5 reasons why your kid might say I don’t like that! Parents hear this so often with their littles; I know I do! The problem is, when our kids say it about a food that they’ve liked or eaten before, it’s tempting to say:... But you liked it last week! Just have a bite, I know you’ll like it! But you love that, why aren’t you eating it tonight? This type of pressure may actually DISCOURAGE KIDS from liking/trying a food. They might not be feeling it at that moment, or they had their heart set on something else. If they’ve never tried it before, this might be because they need more time to warm up to it. 4 things you can do when your kiddo says: I DON’T LIKE IT: 1 Tell them they don’t have to eat it. This immediately takes the pressure off. Deep breaths and play it cool they might surprise you. 2 Offer a place to put the food they don’t want. If they’re upset that it’s on their plate, show them where they can put it instead (a ‘no-thank’ you plate for unwanted food). 3 Keep offering it frequently. Keep it in the regular meal rotation as tastes and preferences are always evolving and changing. 4 Model eating and enjoying it yourself! Bottom line if you’ve heard I DON’T LIKE IT before, understanding why they say it might help you feel more comfortable about serving it again and again. I work with families to help them find realistic ways to feed their children, and feel confident doing it. They go from feeling worried about their child’s growth to confident and calm at mealtimes.
