Reposting an article I wrote a while back about things you can do to BOOST your immune system. Very relevant right now. 1. Get outside and get some SUNSHINE and... FRESH AIR. (vitamin D from sun exposure on your skin is thought to be significantly more beneficial for your immune system than a supplement.) 2. A good quality VITAMIN C supplement and a good quality PROBIOTIC is worth taking right now. 3. Load up on VEGETABLES and FRUIT and cut your intake of sugar. STAY HEALTHY! See more

Despite what popular magazines might say, if you think you can exercise your way to weight loss, I am sorry to say you are in for a big disappointment. Using... exercise to lose weight without changing your diet is asking for failure. You can change your diet and lose weight, but if you exercise and keep your diet the same, you may gain some muscle, improve endurance, and be healthier overall, but you won’t shed many pounds. Consider this: If you consume one 20-ounce soda, you have to walk four and a half miles to burn it off. If you consume one supersize fast-food meal, you have to run four miles a day for one whole week to burn it off. If you eat that every day, you have to run a marathon every single day to burn it off. And if you still buy into the calorie is a calorie myth, this blog will convince you otherwise. Simply put, you cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet. That said, combining a whole, unprocessed diet with the right exercise does wonders for your health. I don’t want you to get the impression that I don’t think exercise is important. If, up until now, exercise hasn’t been a regular part of your life, start with 30 minutes of brisk walking or even slow walking, if that’s all you can do. If you can only do five minutes, start with that and do it twice a day and then work up slowly over the week. Walking is easy, it’s accessible to almost everyone, and it doesn’t require any memberships or fancy equipment. Getting into great shape doesn’t mean hours at the gym, plodding along on elliptical machines or suffering through classes lead by punishing drill-sergeant instructors. While I hate to exercise, I love to play. I find different things that keep me fit. I encourage you to explore all the fun things you may enjoy and save exercise for those times when you just can’t find a way to play on your own or with someone else. Vary up your routine and above all, make it fun. Some of my favorite ways to play include going for a hike, taking a class, going on a bike ride, or just dancing to your favorite tunes in your house.

The federal government’s dietary guidelines convinced us to replace our scrambled eggs and butter with low-fat strawberry yogurt (which has about the same amoun...t of sugar as a can of soda) and orange juice. Many of us followed those recommendations dutifully, swapping saturated fat for sugar. But instead of getting slimmer and healthier, we got fatter and sicker. That’s because sugar is more than empty calories: It spurs inflammation, accelerates weight gain (especially belly fat), sets the stage for heart attacks and strokes, and contributes to cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. The government was dead wrong. The key to ridding yourself of this problem is recognizing the special harm that sugar represents, knowing where to look for it, and eliminating it completely for a few weeks. Focus on: - Eating real, whole foods - Filling your plate with 75% veggies - Eat a nutritious, protein filled breakfast - Get good quality sleep - Exercise regularly See more

We all eat several times a day, so it only makes sense that we should be connected to where that food is coming from and how it’s impacting our health, environm...ent, economy, and communities. Many people are taking action to shift the state of our food system away from one that pigeonholes farmers into monoculture and floods our markets with refined soy, corn, and wheat to one that embraces sustainable and regenerative agriculture and policies that improve public health instead. We cannot arrive at a better health care system by doing the same things better. We must transform medical education, research, practice, and policy to match the current scientific shift from reductionist, organ-based medicine to a more ecological understanding of health and disease based on systems medicine. We cannot otherwise get to the solutions for our health care crisis, or solve the problem of chronic disease. Functional medicine is the best-kept secret in science and medicine today. That must and can change by implementing initiatives in research, education, collaboration, and policy on a large scale to support and nurture the seed of a viable health care system nationally and globally. Functional medicine provides a framework for how to create health, not simply treat symptoms or diseases, and can serve to inform the policy changes needed to create a healthy nation. See more
