Baby its cold outside! In the warm summer months, horses are often eager to drink, but their motivation to hydrate can decrease during the winter when the cold weather arrives. Preventing dehydration in your horse during the winter can help to also prevent serious health issues, like impaction colic. Decreased water intake during the winter months is believed to be a primary risk factor for impaction colic's.... These tips can help to encourage your horse to stay hydrated, even on cold winter days! A heated water source will encourage your horse to drink more water- Many local feed stores carry heated buckets or immersion heaters to add to your regular water source Add some flavour to your water source- Additives like apple juice or electrolytes may make your horse more willing to drink. Always be sure to offer a non-flavoured water option as well Warm, soupy mashes- mix warm water into your horse’s grain, hay cubes or minerals to create an oatmeal or soup like consistency. Most horses will enjoy the warm treat and the added water will encourage hydration.

Have you ever wondered what it means to have your horses teeth floated? Check out our video of Dr. Eden and Richelle demonstrating a power float on Carona Floating is the term used to describe the removal of sharp enamel points and cingulae that could be damaging to your horse’s mouth. If not removed these sharp areas in your horses mouth can inhibit their ability to chew food properly and cause pain. Floating helps your horse maintain a healthy occlusion. A healthy mouth = a HEALTHY HORSE

This is a great visual as to why we use more water vs oil for impaction colics. Oil used to be a major component in the treatment of impactions but we have learned to recognize the importance of using more water and electrolytes. This is frequently asked question/observation by many clients.

Managing chronic foot pain in horses has come a long way in the last ten years. Radiographs (X-rays) have long been able to show bone-related injuries. Ultrasou...nd, which can be useful for diagnosing soft-tissue injuries in the leg and elsewhere, cant always penetrate deep enough into the foot to offer a conclusive diagnosis. Thats why MRI has been such a diagnostic asset. Thanks to MRI, we have discovered that equine foot pain has myriad causes; one such problem can be adhesions in the navicular bone or navicular bursa (the sac cushioning the bone from the deep digital flexor tendon, or DDFT). In this photo, Dr. Joanna Virgin is performing a navicular bursoscopy. This is a minimally invasive surgery used to treat and remove painful scar tissue within the bursa as well as tears of the deep digital flexor tendon in the foot. Studies have shown a significant improvement in the return to full athleticism with surgical management versus medical management alone.

10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT EQUINE NUTRITION, courtesy of UC Davis Center for Equine Health. It is in every equestrians best interest to have a basic unde...rstanding of equine nutrition and be able to identify sources of essential vitamins and minerals in a horses diet. Dietary deficiencies and excesses can both cause health issues and affect performance. This becomes even more important for the care and management of horses with disorders such as equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM). Be sure to work with your veterinarian and/or equine nutritionist to formulate diets appropriate for your horses needs to keep them feeling and performing their best! Spring is just around the corner- for all of our expecting clients or future prospective breeding clients, a nice summary of what to expect during foaling, as well as when to call the veterinarian:). In an apparent normal foaling, a post foaling examination and blood test to check for passive transfer, approximately 12 hours following delivery is IMPERATIVE. This will ensure both the health of the newborn foal and mare following foaling, and identify any health concerns ea...rly to give the mare and foal the best chance at a healthy start! Please call the office if you have any questions regarding foaling or breeding! Eden Equine Veterinary Services Team
