Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) utilize many different tools while working at-sea. These clear rulers double as a range stick to help MMOs measure distance when recording marine mammal sightings. Hot tip: you need to be able to see the horizon, otherwise this nifty tool won't work.

Happy Friday! Here is fun ocean themed comic to give you a little laugh, and to remind you that our trash does not belong in the ocean. We can easily recognize the difference between a plastic bag and a jellyfish, but marine animals cannot!

Calling all marine mammal observers! Need a refresher on your certification? Register for our Canada-MMO Recurrent Course - designed specifically for those who are certified Canadian MMOs and need a refresher on legislations, updated policies, and best practices surrounding MMO work in Canada. If you are an international MMO who wants to learn more about Canadian marine mammal observing, we have a course for that too. Check out our MMO Bridging Program! Yesterday we hit 500 likes on our Facebook page, wow! Thank you all for your support of our small woman-owned business as we do our part to promote ocean literacy and conservation through our consultancy services and training courses. Next goal: 1,000!

We support ocean literacy in anyway we can, that's why each year Edgewise Environmental donates 100% of our SpreadShirt shop proceeds to a local ocean initiative. We were happy to donate to the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium last year, and just as happy to be donating to the Clean Harbours Initiative this year!

This weekend is your last chance to support the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium through the purchase of Edgewise gear in our shop. Enjoy 20% off everything from the 26th-29th: https://buff.ly/2COpkXk Starting April 1, we will be supporting a new local ocean initiative. More details coming next week.

Mermaid or manatee? To some, they are one and the same. Today is Manatee Appreciation Day, and to show some love for these rotund sea cows we're sharing some fun facts about them. Did you know they are believed to be what Christopher Columbus actually saw when he claimed he saw mermaids?

Last week we showcased some common whales of Western Canada. This week, in honour of starting our MMO course in NL, here are some species that are commonly seen throughout Atlantic Canada. Have you ever spotted any of these cetaceans in Atlantic waters?

Happy #marinemammal Monday! Cetaceans are essential to maintaining balance within the ocean ecosystem. Not only do they consume but they give back by providing nutrients and a food source in the forms of "whale falls" in the deep sea.

Friendly reminder to properly dispose of single-use face masks - these photos were taken by one of our staff members in St. John's in the span of a few days. We all must do our part to reduce pollution and keep our planet, and ourselves, safe.

Today in Canada we are observing Remembrance Day. A day for our country to honour and remember those who came before and paid the ultimate price so that we may know peace. #LestWeForget

Beware of bags! Sea turtles often try to eat plastic bags because they can look just like jellyfish. Sea turtles have spiky protrusions, known as papillae, which line their mouth and esophagus and allow them to eat jellyfish without being stung, but it can also lead to plastic bags getting stuck in their throats or stomachs. We must continue to do our part in eliminating plastic waste in order to mitigate this risk for sea turtles.... Read more: https://buff.ly/35f58cg.

Yes, you read that right...killer whales are NOT whales! They are actually the largest member of the dolphin family. It is said that sailors called them "whale killers", which eventually evolved into "killer whale". The more you know! Read more: https://buff.ly/31HA5Dk

When you live your life underwater but still need to breathe air sleeping can become complicated. Whales sleep vertically, and use only one hemisphere of their brain at a time. Scientists think this is to help them avoid predators, maintain social contact and control their breathing! Read more: https://buff.ly/3lCTE8f
