Today is a very special day for our Edmonton Métis Traditional Dancers as we remember our founder of out group and wish my late mother Georgina Donald on her birthday. She started the group in 1985 at the Canadian Native Friendship Center. We had several different dancers over the years and as a family we had four generations of Donald family members that danced with the group for the past 35 years. With the Covid 19 influenza, we have not been able to celebrate our three and... a half decades as the longest organized Métis (Michif) dance groups in North America. The year we started we seen a post the was written by our past Métis Leader Louis Riel stating "My people will sleep for one hundred years, when they awake, it will be the Artists who give them there spirit back. So, Happy Birthday Georgina Donald, the group has had several young people from our community, as well as four generations of our Donald family, perform, and teach and tell the stories of our traditional Métis culture music and dance. We all miss you and love you and thank you for taking the time in your life to help young people to understand and to be proud of their Métis heritage. In this learn to dance video that was made in 1999. one of our dancers did not show up for the production, so we had to ask Georgina to dance with the kids to demonstrate the dance. We are so glad that she did, because it is a great memory for all of us to have her in this format to appreciate her gift love and knowledge as an elder of our nation See more
