Today is Bell Let's Talk Day which encourages all Canadians to increase awareness and reduce the stigma of mental health. While one in five Canadians will experience a mental illness at some point in their life, most will be cautious about talking to a co-worker, friend or family member about the issue, let alone seek treatment. And while you may not experience mental illness first-hand, it is likely that you know someone who has or will have a mental illness. For anyone fac...ing mental illness, stigma is one of the biggest hurdles to overcome. In fact, it is the leading reason why two-thirds of people living with a mental illness do not seek help. Talk with your family doctor about supports available to you such as a PCN Behavioural Health Consultant which offer a safe environment to talk to about stress, anxiety, pandemic fears, and much more. #BellLetsTalk #StillHereForYou

COVID-19 is on everyone's mind, but do not put your other health concerns on hold any longer. Family doctors are the best option for ongoing medical care. Management of chronic conditions, physical injuries, and routine physical tests are some examples of appointments that may need to be in-person. Contact your doctor’s office to discuss your appointment options to keep you and their clinic safe.

On behalf of the Edmonton Zone Primary Care Networks, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, clinic staff, patients and colleagues of the physician who was attacked and killed in his clinic at Village Mall Walk-in Clinic in Red Deer. We thank the first responders and brave citizens who did their best to help. We recognize the safety concerns and fears that our family physician members, PCN health care providers, and clinic staff may be troubled with when hearing about such a tragic event in the medical community. Let’s support each other through this. If you need additional support, the Mental Health Help Line is available toll-free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-877-303-2642.

Mapping out your nutrition needs is important to ensure you have a nourishing and safe outdoor adventure. Pack lightweight, nutrient-dense, non-perishable foods like nuts, seeds, or dried fruits and veggies for hikes. Bring plenty of clean drinking water especially for more active or hot weather days. Always follow good food safety practices from packing items in a cooler to properly cooking raw meat on the grill.
Wishing everyone a safe and wonderful Canada Day!
