Big Fan and Big Friend Len Nunes wrote this great piece for us about yesterday's Big Announcement: For the first time in Western Canadian Baseball League history, all players will be from Canada!...The league announced yesterday that the 2021 season will not feature all eleven of its member franchises. The Okotoks Dawgs (2 teams), Lethbridge Bulls, Sylvan Lake Gulls and Edmonton Prospects have committed teams consisting of Canadian talent. The Fort McMurray Giants and Medicin...e Hat Mavericks continue to discuss the options available to them and will decide in the coming weeks whether they will play this season or not. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 Restrictions, testing costs, border issues and the uncertainty of this time, the Swift Current 57’s, Regina Red Sox, Weyburn Beavers, Moose Jaw Miller Express and Brooks Bombers have regrettably made the difficult and heartbreaking decision to wait until 2022 to return to the field. WCBL President Kevin Kvame also noted that the decisions have been made in the best interests of players, coaches, staff, officials and fans. He adds the teams are eager to bring baseball back to each community as quickly and safely as possible, with government and health authority consent, as baseball is a part of the fabric of our communities and it’s vital to provide a safe outlet for our world-class athletes... The excerpts above are from the Western Canadian Baseball League announcement made March 25th in regards to the upcoming 2021 season. A "return to play" plan to be approved by Alberta Health Services is in the works. Four of those Canadians will be returnees to our Club. Player Signing LHP-Daiki Asaumi, Yokohama, Japan Tokai University... Daiki is a LHP entering his Junior season with Tokai University and has had a big role with Tokai since his Freshman year, starting 13 games and posting a 3.22 ERA. Daiki said this about signing with the Prospects for 2021, I’m really excited to be a part of the Edmonton Prospects this summer. I’m hoping to contribute for the team and to contribute for winning. We’ve formed a relationship with a Japanese baseball program that brought us Katsu Takahashi in 2019 and we’re excited to continue that relationship with Daiki this summer. Lots of autographs on it like "E. W. Burrow", another one is last name "Hager" and another looks like maybe "Hay"? It's quite a mystery. Can anyone shed an light on it?

Let's do a fun flashback today! Sunday, July 7, 2019: The Edmonton Prospects hosted the All-Star Game for the WCBL. It was the first All-Star Game for the league in many years. One of the many highlights of the day was the exciting fact that former major-league slugger Matt Stairs was there as our guest. This former MLB Star is a proud Canadian from St. John, NB and he still holds the record for pinch-hit home runs by an individual. We were honoured and delighted to have... Matt as our guest. We took him for a round of golf to the Victoria Golf Course down the road from Re/Max Field. We discovered that he was a fascinating and fun guy. Later that evening at the game, he displayed his innate knowledge of the baseball swing as he analyzed and dissected each player's swing and how it could be improved to us. He signed lots of autographs and left us with a few of these gems to auction off. We are down to just 2 of these beauties and one is up for auction today on our auction page. Please continue to support local baseball during this difficult time and consider putting a bid in for this valuable baseball signed by one of the great Canadian players in the game. Player Signing OF-Trent Lawson, Calgary, AB Vancouver Island University Mariners... Trent plays for Coach Nick Salahub @viubaseball which is located in Nanaimo, BC. The VIU Mariners play in the @ccbcofficial . Trent was scorching hot last spring before the shutdown collecting 10 XBH’s and 4 SB’s in 30 AB’s. Trent played his youth baseball with the @calgaryredbirds program. @coach_salahub had this to say about Trent, Trent is a great baseball player and an even better young man. 2021 Player Signing OF-Derek Zavala, South El Monte, CA Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders... Derek is entering his Junior season at Lindsey Wilson College located in Columbia, Kentucky. In the abbreviated 2020 College Baseball season, Derek was leading the Mid-South Conference in Hits (32) and Stolen Bases (21). Cody Andreychuk, Head Coach at LW Blue Raiders had this to say about Derek, Derek is a go-getter in the OF and handles the bat extremely well. Derek is an exciting player to watch play the game of baseball.
