What comes to your mind when you think about God? This is a question that AW Tozer asked in His book, The Knowledge of the Holy (p 9). Whether we acknowledge it or not, everything about us is determined by who we, in our hearts, conceive God to be. Yes, our understanding of the universe, society, governance, family, ourselves, and every other area of life, are all dictated by our view of God. Perhaps our society is in such trouble today, because we have exchanged the God ...who is for the god we’ve made in our image. That’s why it is so important to come back to the Bible to consider what God says about himself in black and white, so that we may see Him as He truly is. My prayer is that, through this series, as we look at who the Bible says God is, we will discover again, that God is high and lifted, to be feared and revered, and that we would be encouraged to offer our lives to him, because this is the only reasonable response to who GOD IS. These are uncommon times. None of us here have lived through a season like we have just gone through, where the whole world has been halted by COVID19, and the uncertainty that It has brought with it. Something else that is has brought is fear. We have all struggled with fear to some extent: fear of contracting the virus, fear of the consequences of the shutdown, fear of being alone, fear of the unknown, and fear of what comes next. We have been inundated with laws and by...laws and recommendations and varying opinions. We have realized that as many ways there are to understand and apply these directives given to us, there are opinions. Opinions that many feel strongly about. This is simply one manifestation of one issue, of which there are many. Because of this, if we choose to focus on our opinions, letting them become too central, our differences will divide us, whether that’s within ourselves, within our marriages, our families, even our church community and the community at large. So as we embark on the next stage of this uncommon season, for the next three weeks, I would like remind each of us of three things from Ephesians 2-3, that as Christians we hold In Common: Our Salvation, Our Identity and our Purpose. And my prayer is that as we reflect on the common ground we share in Christ, that we will be able to say with the song writer as we turn our eyes upon Jesus, that the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.
