Today we honour the memory of all the transgender, two-spirit, non-binary, and gender diverse folks who h...ave lost their lives due to transphobic violence and discrimination. Today we bring awareness to the disproportionate amount of violence and discrimination that trans, non-binary, two-spirit, queer, and gender fluid folks face in our society. Today we bring awareness to trans, two-spirit, and gender diverse sex workers who lost their lives on the job. Today we bring awareness to the Black, Indigenous, and radicalized transgender folks who continue to be targets of hate. Today we bring awareness to the trans, two-spirit, and gender diverse folks who have taken their own lives due to hate and bullying. Today we bring awareness to all the trans youth who have lost their lives way too young due to transphobic violence. Today we bring awareness to all those transgender and gender diverse folks that have lost their lives while in prison or jail, due to violence and discrimination. At the Elizabeth Fry Society Simcoe Muskoka, we support individuals of all genders and strive to be a gender inclusive environment where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and supported while they are staying at our shelter. All trans and gender diverse individuals deserve safety, dignity, and respect. We will keep breaking down institutionalized systems that assign gender, discriminate against gender, perpetuate the gender binary, and systems that inherently place individuals into situations where violence is almost inevitable, such as the prison systems.
