Constant hyperextension and/or locking out into the joint (over extending) can lead to joint degeneration. For my hypermobile clients we work on developing awareness of movement patterns, correct alignment and strengthening the essential muscles to gain "joint stability" in action.

Did you know, the lumbar spine when the hips are behind the knees can potentially overwork the QL muscle and weaken the lower back? With the correct alignment, the lumbar spine will not take the load. In this position we are seeking to encourage abdominal muscles, strengthen back muscles, multifidus, and engage pelvic floor. For hypermobility it’s essential to work with the natural curve and ensure the shoulders are stabilized. If you’re practicing at home check your alignment practising with the hips above knees, not behind the knees.

Emre loves movement and he is hypermobile, and this effects his joints and lower back. We are working to re-educate movement patterns involving: - practising in a smaller range - grounding and connecting with the back line - focusing and concentration... - developing proprioceptive awareness - Joint stability - Experiencing the core throughout - Pelvic Floor re-education When working with hyper mobility smaller range helps stabilise the joints while grounding and proprioceptive awareness, in turn, supports the body and mind to concentrate and be present. Working from the feet and focusing on the back line helps Emre feel more grounded. His practise integrates closed chain movements and on-going joint stability and grounding tools. In this particular session we are waking up serratus anterior, gluteus medius, and re-educating the hamstrings to function in movements that support the feet to connect and ground. The final exercise, in this short video, shows Emre practise a movement where he is lifted off the ground to see if he can maintain his core throughout. A challenging movement that requires the core and shoulder stability to work in synchronisation, whilst maintaining a small range. Emre focuses on maintaining a small range, stabilising his core throughout and engaging serratus anterior to support shoulder stability. With concentration, he moves with quality not quantity, and this can be a tiring experience for most people with hypermobility. Emre is proactive in learning corrective movement and, most importantly, has a healthy attitude to mind and body and managing his individual joint issues and/or pain from Hypermobility. Developing a daily self practise that incorporates grounding and stabilisation is key for anyone living with hypermobility.

The beginning mentally and physically prepares .. The middle requires awareness, practising-in-process, listening and self correcting. The end is for restoration, supporting structural re-organization, giving the body space and time to absorb and/or retain at a cellular level.#pilatesfoundation #yoga #osteopathy #structural-integration #balancedbodypilates #restorative-posture #healing #somatic-body #Pilatesyogamovement #inversiontherapy #basipilates #breathingtechniques #yogaTulum #amansalaTulum #esthermyersyogastudio @ Yorkville, Toronto
