It is with a heavy heart that we inform you all that former National Executive Administrator/ Director and Honorary Past Grand Exalted Ruler, Brother Bill Blake passed away suddenly on Tuesday, November 10th, 2020. Mr. Bill as he was known to a lot of us, started his career with the Elks of Canada following the 1987 Grand Lodge Convention inWinnipeg as the result of a special Resolution presented by the Finance Committee and endorsed by the Grand Executive. He came with a m...ost impressive and comprehensive background that included financial, administrative and personnel relations. The concept of his role as Executive Administrator was to assume the responsibility not just for Grand Lodge Office but also for the National Charity, The Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children as it is known today. Under his direction, a prolonged program for restructuring, re-organizing, re-financing, automation, staff educational programs and other efficiencies was instrumental in resolving a long time financial crisis facing the Order. Bill was also instrumental in the Elks of Canada purchasing their own building in 1992 and having it paid off within 5 years under his advice and financial recommendations. I has been humorously stated that Bill might be considered vertically challenged but could not be accused of being vocally challenged. In his role as Devil’s Advocate he provided invaluable input that caused the Grand Executives and Committees, many times to rethink and rework their proposals and recommendations prior to presentation for implementation. Bill’s skills have been very evident and most beneficial and his wit, sincerity and knowledge have earned him the respect of the membership. By being involved in all activities of the Order, Bill became a friend and comforter of the majority of the members, using every opportunity to promote and support Elkdom. Bill served as a mentor, advisor, council as well as a personal friend to many who knew him. Over the years Bill was recognized for his dedicated service. In 2001 he was awarded Honorary Grand Lodge Life Membership as well as an Honorary Membership in the Past Grand Exalted Rulers Association the same year. At the 100th Anniversary Grand Lodge National Convention that was held in Chilliwack, BC in 2012, Bill was awarded office and title of Honorary Past Grand Exalted Ruler. In the 100 year history of the Elks of Canada, that was only the second time this honor has been awarded. On several occasions, he has received and earned the plaudit well done thy good and faithful servant. After 28 years of service with the Elks of Canada, Mr. Bill retired in 2015, but unfortunately did not get to enjoy many years of retirement before his untimely passing.
