Canada’s engagement in Afghanistan was our country’s most significant military operation in recent years. More than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces members would serve in the Afghanistan theatre of operations between 2001 and 2014. It was very dangerous duty and Corporal Dustin Wasden of Saskatchewan was killed along with two fellow soldiers as the result of an improvised explosive device blast on August 20, 2008. The 1 Combat Engineer Regiment soldier was 25. An island in northern Saskatchewan has been named in his honour (the island is within a lake named after his great-uncle Harold Wasden who lost his life during the Second World War).
