Over 150,000 Indigenous children were ripped from their families and placed in Canada's Indian Residential Schools. Last year, on October 3rd, we saw a bright o...range cloth raised with 2,800 of the names of what the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation tells us were 4,200 children who died in those schools. Today, we remember every one of the children, those who died and those who survived. We remember their parents and grandparents, their aunties and uncles, their children and grandchildren. We give thanks for the strength they have shown in the face of what was done to them, for who they are and who they will be. We give thanks that many have told their stories, and that those stories have made the rest of Canada see the terrible things that were done to them, their families, their communities. As I go to don my orange shirt, I wonder what could happen if each of us, especially those of us who are Newcomers, Settlers and descendents of Settlers, who are wearing orange today sat down to write the Prime Minister, the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, and our own Member of Parliament, to urge them to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, to remind them of this government's commitment to clean drinking water in Indigenous communities that have been under long-standing boil water orders, or to work with Indigenous leadership and the provinces and territories to fight against the systemic racism in the child welfare or justice systems. The orange shirt is a testimony to every child who was taken by the Indian Residential School system. I hope that testimony will not only be memory, but challenge for the future. #everychildmatters #orangeshirtday #uccan

The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and with all creation. During this Season we join our sisters and brothers in the ecumenical community in prayer for our Common Home and in a commitment together to care for the Earth.
