I’ve been a little quiet over here lately. I’ve been working on finalizing our 2021 peony catalogue, that will open beginning of April , getting all the shipping things lined up for dahlia shipping and a whole lot of website work. I’ve been watching the forecast, and as soon as it warms up reliably, I’ll start shipping your dahlias out. It’s starting to look like the first week of April (why is March so cold!?) You can preview the peonies online. All of... the descriptions have been added and I recommend taking your time to read through now without the stress of varieties selling out quickly. : Blushing Princess Peony, available spring 2021 See more

Happy February! I missed it yesterday. I was too bogged down in paperwork. Groundhog didn’t see his shadow! So let’s talk spring prep. What seeds should you be starting in February in a zone 4/5? All 12-8 weeks before last frost seeds. delphiniums... foxgloves asters snapdragons sweet peas The slow growing stuff, or the plants that need to be planted out before last frost (sweet peas like to be planted out 4 weeks before last frost or when the ground has unfrozen) This week, I’ll be pre sprouting butterfly ranunculus. I am very excited about them. Pictured here is Fleurel dahlia. I thought she was appropriate due to our current snowstorm weather. See more

For the flower farmer january is for planning and organizing the coming flower season. I’m dreaming of warm summer days and deciding which zinnias to grow this year. It is true- and I’ve been repeating it often, I am making the cut flower portion of our farm smaller and giving more time, space and attention to dahlias and peonies. However- put a seed catalogue in front of me and I can’t help myself, I want to grow everything. I’ll be showing some restraint, but not for zinnias. They’re easy to grow, not fussy, and so cheery. Might even add a couple Oklahoma Salmon plants to my flower border at the house.

Where flowers bloom, so does hope- Lady Bird Johnson We could all use a little more hope and peace today. So my head is in the peonies again. This peony is Garden Peace a Saunders cultivar. ... A personal romantic favourite for a garden peony. An elegant plant. My favourite aspect of her is the contrast between her white petals and red stems. . #peonies #peony #canadiangrown #underthefloralspell #garden #flowergarden #canadiangardening #flowerfarm #quebec #canada #peonyaddict #peonylove #growwildlybeautiful #flowerpower See more

I’ll be finished digging dahlias tomorrow I feel like I’ve been digging up plants forever. I’ll be happy to retire my fork and shovel for a little while. I’ll be dividing the dahlias at my leisure in my toasty warm basement, probably until mid November. When I’m done, I’ll get the dahlia catalogue ready for purchasing. I’m not rushing it or setting an exact date ( that puts so much unnecessary pressure on myself for no reason, live and learn ) . Th...ere’s lots of new varieties this year, as well as most of last year’s catalogue as well. The tuber production this year is a mixed bag. Some varieties are beefy, while others did not do a whole lot (looking at you Daisy Duke, it flowered it’s head off, but didn’t do a whole lot in the way of tuber production). From my experience though, size doesn’t mean a whole lot in the dahlia world. I always keep the scrappy little ones and sell the most robust ones. Honestly, the plants are the same. Just something to remember when dividing your own, as long as there’s a viable eye, it’ll grow into a plant 2020 overall was not a great dahlia year. Not every year can be great. That’s not realistic. 2020 is behind us now and really looking forward to 2021. I’ve already bought a few new varieties to add to my collection and I’m so looking forward to seeing not just 2 rows of 150’ but 5! Pictured here is Sandra’s Tiffany. We’re winding down for the year here. Wrapping up dahlia digging this week, bulbs are all planted, and I’m like 99.9% done planting peonies. Already dreaming of our peony field in bloom, and getting excited for our 2021 peony catalogue. Sunny Day (Hollingsworth, 2011) pictured here will be featured.
