The results are in from the National Tick Study that Equi-Tech Veterinary took part in two years ago. Thank you to all who participated! The results are clear that Deer Ticks are now endemic in Manitoba. Not only can they carry the bacteria that can cause Lyme's Disease, but Southern Manitoba and Ontario are seeing an increase in Anaplasma organisms as well. Did you know that the "Heartworm Test" that is done for dogs is actually a 4-way test? It's actual name is a SNAP 4Dx t...est. Yes it tests dogs for infection with adult heart worms, but it also checks to see if dogs have antibodies against 3 organisms that are carried by Deer Ticks. Those are: Borrelia (responsible for Lyme's disease), Anaplasma (responsible for Anaplasmosis), and Ehrlichia (responsible for Ehrlichiosis). For more information about this test or to book this test for your dog, please call the office. 204-467-2083 See more

COVID-19 Update: January 2021 With the province continuing to be in Code Red, we continue to be very diligent in adhering to the public health orders. As most of you know, we have made changes to our protocols in order to facilitate the social distancing required inside the building.... Because of these changes and the resulting ease of flow of traffic in the building, we are now able to resume booking of elective surgeries for dogs and cats. There is no longer a waiting list for booking routine spays and neuters. A gentle reminder about some of our protocol changes that have made a huge improvement in managing the flow of people and pets in the clinic: 1. No walk in's allowed for retail and prescription items. Please call ahead and book a pick-up time. Pre-payment can also be made. 2. Please allow 24 hours for prescription refills and 5 business days for special orders of food and/or medications. 3. No walk-in appointments allowed 4. We are still not booking appointments for nail trims or minor grooming at this time (unless there is a medical reason). Acupuncture services are also suspended at this time. 5. Only one person can accompany their pet into the exam room. 6. Please ensure that you bring a leash or carrier for your pet. As much as possible we will be keeping exam room doors open to assist with ventilation (know to be a huge factor in transmission of the virus). 7. We continue to be closed Saturdays, Sundays, and all holidays 8. Please be aware that we have only 2 phone lines. We ask for your patience as we attend to heavy call volumes and the returning of messages. Please do not use email or Facebook messenger to try to book appointments. These platforms are not checked on a regular basis, and we want to be able to serve you in the most efficient manner possible. Thank you all for your continued support and cooperation! Happy 2021 to you all :-)

Happy New Years from our family to yours !!!

It takes a very special type of person to become a veterinary technician. The job, while it can be extremely rewarding, has its share of ups and downs. Over time, the job can take its toll both physically and emotionally. Did you know that the average veterinary technician changes careers after less than 10 years on the job? Lucky enough for us, we have had an above average vet tech on our team! We have had the privilege to have Jill Gillespie in our employ for the last 3.5 ...years. Her expertise in delivering exceptional patient care was experienced by many in her time spent with us. Not only has she been exceptional in her technical skills with respect to medical and surgical procedures and nursing care, she has also counselled many clients with her vast knowledge of training, husbandry, and nutrition. Jill has an enormous heart, has always been there when we needed her, has been an outstanding advocate for your pets, and has been that member of the team that you wonder how you would ever do without. Jill has been working as a veterinary technician since 2004, and has decided to hang up her scrubs and stethoscope in exchange for a shingle to hang instead. We are so proud to announce that Jill, in pursuit of her dreams, will be opening up a pet food and supply store in Teulon, in early January. While we do not want to see Jill go, we are so happy for her and wish her nothing but the BEST in her future. Keep an eye out for her store, opening soon: Fluffy's Pet Grocery - Your Interlake Pet Food and Supplies Store. If you see Jill this week, make sure you give her your best wishes!!

Have you ever heard of an American Cream Draft? American Cream have the distinction of being the only draft originating in the United States. Their recorded his...tory is fairly "modern" in comparison to other draft horses. First noted in the early 1900's, a mare of draft breeding "Old Granny", had a cream coloured coat, pink skin and amber eyes. Old Granny passed this traits onto all over her offspring. By 1944, the Iowa Department of Agriculture granted the American Cream a charter, followed by official recognition in the 1950's. Unfortunately during this time, draft horses began to lose their purpose in daily life, especially on farms. The breed almost disappeared completely. Since 1982 concerted efforts have been made to preserve American Cream. There are currently around 400 animals registered. Each registered horse must meet breed standard and also remain true to type in terms of conformation. American Cream breeders have resisted trends towards a more "hitchy" draft horse. Mature animals will range from 1800 to 2000lbs and stand 15-16.3 hands high. American Cream are known not only for their distinct colouring, but also their calm, willing temperament. There are a handful of American Cream in Canada. HLC would appreciate hearing from breeders and owners of American Cream. To learn more about the breed: https://acdha.org. HLC's Virtual Show Draft Horse Division closed with 145 entries, featuring 71 horses! We have entries of Suffolk, American Cream, Spotted Draft, Clydesdale and ...Percheron. Draft horse populations are scarce worldwide, with numbers of less than 300 in total not uncommon in countries where breeds originated. Making populations in North America and elsewhere part of an international effort to preserve these breeds for future generations. With regard to the Draft Horse Division, HLC would like to acknowledge the efforts of Leah Haney of the American Suffolk Horse Association - Leah's work, translates to Suffolk having the highest number of entries of any breed.
