ALUMNI FEATURE: Dick Meissner - F ('40) from Kindersley, SK! STATS: (1956-59) 148GP - 104G, 80A, 184PTS - 54PIM PLAYOFF STATS: 24GP - 20G, 20A, 40PTS - 9PIM... HOCKEY CAREER: Dick Meissner played three seasons for the franchise, as he played one year with the Humboldt Indians before joining legendary Coach Scotty Munro in the team's move down to Estevan for the start of the 1957-58 season (see clippings from the Regina Leader-Post). Meissner was the first offensive superstar in Bruins' history, putting up impressive point totals for both the '57-58 season (49G, 73PTS in 51GP) and '58-59 season (46G, 89PTS in 46GP). Meissner was named to the SJHL's Second Team All-Star squad and won the 'Most Gentlemanly Player' award in 1958 and was named a First Team All-Star in 1959. The 1958-59 team was very good, finishing second overall to the Flin Flon Bombers in the regular season standings. Then the Bruins defeated the Melville Millionaires and Regina Pats in the playoffs before falling to Flin Flon in 6 games for the league championship. The Bruins won the first two games in Estevan by a combined score of 14-4, before losing the next four games in Flin Flon by a combined score of 25-10...safe to say home-ice advantage was a real thing back in those days! Meissner was then picked up by Flin Flon for the Western Canadian Championship. Meissner tallied 4PTS (2G,2A) as the Bombers fell in 6 games in the final to the Winnipeg Braves, who went on to win the Memorial Cup Championship over the Peterborough Petes. POST-BRUINS: The Estevan Bruins were a direct link to the NHL for junior players at the time, and Meissner jumped immediately into a roster spot for the Boston Bruins in the 1959-60 season, playing in 60 games and scoring 11PTS (6G,5A) alongside teammates Bronco Horvath, Johnny Bucyk, Don McKenney, Vic Stasiuk with Harry Lumley in net. After being sent down to Kingston for the majority of the '60-61 season, Meissner played 66GP for Boston in '61-62 before his time with the Bruins was over as he was traded with McKenney to the New York Rangers for Dean Prentice. Meissner played the '62-63 season with the Rangers' affiliate: the AHL's Hershey Bears before playing 35GP with New York in '63-64. Then, except for one game in the '64-65 season with New York, Meissner played the rest of his career at the AHL level in Baltimore and Providence with stops at lower levels scattered throughout. Meissner retired from pro hockey after the 1974-75 season, tallying a total of 171 NHL games (11G,15A, 26PTS) in his career. Meissner turned 81 years old this past January.
