The most intriguing of Middleweight matchups to come in the first quarter of 2021 will be between former champion Robert Whittaker and the most recent title cha...llenger at 185, Paulo Costa. Whittaker had an active year in 2020, turning back rising contenders in Darren Till and Jared Cannonier. It was the first time since 2017 that Whittaker had competed more than once in a calendar year. The Australian native is 10-1 in the division since moving up in 2014 though he’s yet to garner a finish in 4 years. However, we must also consider the competition. Should Whittaker defeat Costa, he will have beaten three top 5 ranked Middleweights straight, an incredible feat that should garner him a rematch with Adesanya if possible. Costa will be looking to rebound off of the lone loss of his career after falling to Israel in the second round of their fight last Fall. While the Brazilian has steamrolled over the competition prior to facing Izzy, Costa had only two highly ranked victories Uriah Hall and Yoel Romero. Impressive as those wins were, Costa now faces a man who has nearly faced over 65% of the top 15. However, Costa also holds one of the highest finishing rates in the division, having won 11 of his 13 career wins by way of knockout. Whittaker’s experience and speed plays a key advantage while Costa’s power and ferocious pace will make for one of the most exciting Middleweight bouts that this year could possibly produce.
