Team Building Pitfalls: Pitfalls to Avoid During Virtual Team Building Join me for a no-holds-barred conversation about pitfalls to avoid during virtual team building. 1. Attend as many virtual sessions as possible... 2. Never wing it...rehearse, especially the technical aspects. 3. Don't do it alone. 4. Bring people in at least 10 minutes before start time to deal with technical glitches. 5. Check in to make sure everyone can hear you. 6. Ask participants to mute themselves when you're presenting. Deal with any distractions immediately. 7. Make it interactive or people will fall asleep. 8. Start with a decompression exercise so that people can focus. 9. Use energizers. 10. Be prepared to switch gears to meet the needs of participants. 11. Allow thinking time and don't be afraid about silence. 12. Give more attention to interaction management with teams that are working remotely. VERY IMPORTANT: Remember that video games are not a substitute for facilitated virtual team building. What other pitfalls need to be avoided during virtual team building? #virtualteambuilding #teambuilding #executiveoasis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcFTiBI4IuA

Connecting the Dots: What Impact is COVID-19 expected have on Canada's Economy? A W-shaped economy can be anticipated? No Canadian industry is untouched by COVID-19. ... As USA is Canada's major trading partner, trade sector, representing about 60 - 64% of the economy, will likely recover well. Canadian tourism and travel sectors can pretty well write off this year. Hotels will have a hard time recovering. The aerospace industry will face significant challenges. The Canadian auto industry will continue to be under a lot of pressure. The oil and gas industry will not easily rebound. Retail will also likely struggle for a while. Some restaurants won't re-open. Companies manufacturing paper products, cleaning supplies, and medical supplies should fare well. How do you view Canada's prospects for a 2020 economic recovery? If you're based outside Canada, what prospects for economic recovery have been forecasted for your country? #economy #canada #covid19 #recovery #executiveoasis Every Tuesday, and unpack economic and stock market trends in Connecting the Dots on LinkedIn. Watch out for Zooombombing This is one time I wish I could put the headline in red. Zoombombing = Hijacking & flooding virtual meetings with porn, profanity, & the vilest misogynistic & racist rants. ... Last week, I was first alerted about this HUGE virtual meeting risk through a feature on The National on TV in Canada. It's a growing risk of virtual meetings. To avoid it: Do NOT post the meeting ID online. Password protect the meeting. Always have someone provide tech support to assist participants & boot intruders. Last night, I noticed a number of people in my network STILL posting meeting IDs & passwords. * = My apologies to my network. I learned about this last week but didn't post this as my expertise is in meeting facilitation NOT tech. In this case, by "staying in my lane", a meeting I attended last night had just been Zoombombed traumatizing participants. STOP Have you ever been Zoombombed? It's a VERY unsettling experience for the host, guests, & participants. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEESnmEudkE

Lemons to Lemonade: Bouncing Back Coronavirus Lessons from SARS, 9/11 & 2008 I rarely post about my business ups & downs.... In Canada, such transparency hurts your credibility & can cost you business. Since everyone in the world has been hit, I'm sharing my story to encourage others. In 1996, the Internet was in its infancy. I launched my fist business, The Training Oasis, Inc. Business came by phoning executives I knew. A CAPS colleague showed me the value of the web. In Jan. 1997, I launched a website I built myself with Corel Web Designer. People kept asking "Has the website paid for itself?" In 1999, I said "Yes". A company in KL found me online. The world approached Y2K with trepidation. Unboxed my new computer on New Year's Eve. The world didn't end. A week later, I stepped off the plane in Malaysia, beginning a 20-year journey to serve clients in 19 countries. I had tech, telco, & Asian clients. The NASDAQ tanked. Asian business made up for the shortfall at home. I engaged marketing specialists to design a: logo, tagline, stationery, new business cards new website I targeted more industries. Business improved until 9/11. What helped you recover from an economic downturn or business setback? = The strategies I found to be effective. More to come #entrepreneurs #marketing #COVID19 #recovery #executiveoasis Questions welcome. I will be releasing a new e-book with lessons I have learned in the school of hard knocks about bouncing back from business setbacks. It is called: Lemons to Lemonade: Squeezing Opportunities out of Adversity When Business Goes Sour If you are interested, just put "Lemonade" in the comments and I will tag you when it is ready for purchase. Lemons to Lemonade: The Old Curiosity Tea Shop, Markham Alas, afternoon tea is a British tradition my Jamaican homeland abandoned. I was introduced to this glorious pleasure when I honeymooned in Bermuda.... Cynthia Clement from Essex, England collected china teapots, cups, & saucers for decades. On Nov. 4, 1996, she fulfilled her tearoom dreams, opening this exquisite eatery, 5 minutes away from my church. I was one of her 1st clients, visiting with my young son before riding lessons on Saturday or after church on my own. In 2003, the tea store opened, staffed by her husband Roger. SARS emptied Markville Mall. They didn't renew their lease. In 2008, I wasn't the only patron to make the tough decision to forego my weekly tea treat. Many GTA tearooms folded. When their son Adam Clement took over, he put family first, reducing weekday hours & closing on Sunday. Still, this tearoom thrived. After Ontario recently banned dine-in service, an inviting e-mail landed in my inbox: Bringing you comfort one cuppa at a time! "...all carefully packaged for you to enjoy in the comfort of your own home." When life gives you lemons, make tea. Anne Thornley-Brown, President Join the discussion on LinkedIn (link in comments) ---- We're all grounded! Since we're all grounded, I've hit the pause button on my Wednesday Team Building Destinations series. Instead, my new Wednesday series, Lemons to Lemonade will look at how local York Region and GTA businesses are re-inventing themselves to stay afloat. I'll focus on some of the businesses I frequent and discover some new ones.

Team Innovation: [CTRL] + [ALT] + [DEL] Linked Pop-up Statelite event venues via technology to re-boot cancelled conference. The meeting, conference, & event industries contribute US$1,100+ billion to the local and global economies. Yet, fears are triggering meeting and conference cancellations even in locations that have not had a single coronavirus case. ... LG Electronics & ZTE have cancelled their participation in Mobile World Congress in Spain Swatch cancelled its Time to Move event even though there have been on #coronavirus cases in Switzerland. Goldman Sachs cancelled its annual partner meeting in New York because some partners from Asia couldn't travel If this continues, the fallout for the global economy will be catastrophic. It doesn't have to be this way. It was 2016. A conference in Amsterdam was cancelled with less than a month's notice. Within hours, a team of event professionals around the world collaborated and re-booted the conference. pop-up event venues where participants met face-to-face across Canada, in New York, and Amsterdam an online host to introduce the speakers keynotes and interviews presented to all participants via video technology a host/facilitator at each venue to facilitate workshops and discussions lunch and refreshments provided by sponsors networking to end each local event The technology is available to produce an engaging experience even if everyone is not in the same room. Team Building Pitfalls: Failing to stop bullying, harassment, & discrimination This week, our President has been HIGHLY critical of the bullying & harassment of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by the UK media. Fail to protect the rights & privacy of one, fail to protect all.... Shame on editors & broadcasters for not reining in photographers, writers, & TV presenters. In a disgraceful display, Piers Morgan mocked the Chinese language on Good Morning Britain. The media has a profound impact on what society deems to be acceptable. It's a domino effect! When this behaviour is unchecked, it conveys the message that it is fair game to attack, mock, & bully. Corporate executives, editors, & broadcasters MUST hold team members accountable for: Dirty jokes Sexist comments Gossip & backbiting Racist comments & jokes Blocking advancement of top-performing women & visible minority group members A clear code of conduct needs to be outlined, signed by all team members, & ENFORCED! This requires: - a very clear code of conduct - a clear and specific mechanism for reporting and complaints - a while back I posted what we have as actors in our Union ACTRA I will try to find the link and add it here. - training for all employees - code of conduct included in orientation sessions for new team members - code of conduct signed by all team members. - depending on the infraction coaching, suspension. fine, or dismissal Shareholders need to remove corporate & media executives who tolerate & encourage bullying, harassment, & discrimination. What other steps are needed to stop harassment, bullying, & discrimination by the media & in the workplace?

Team Building Pitfalls: How EGO undermines the effectiveness of corporate (& political) leaders. Some leaders in the corporate world and the political arena forget that leadership is not all about them. When egos get in the way, the results are disastrous.... Team Building Tips: When is it important to plan team building? This question was submitted in the comments for one of my previous status updates. While there are no hard and fast rules I would suggest: 1 /2 months before the end of your fiscal year... if your industry and environment is stable, a 6-month checkpoint would be sufficient if your environment is turbulent or your company is going through a lot of changes, I suggest quarterly sessions Always leave team building sessions with action items and clearly identify the members of your team who are tasked with implementing them. #socialmediasos
