Dry eye disease is very commonly due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). There are approximately 30-40 meibomian glands in the upper lid and 20-30 in the lower lid. These glands are responsible for producing the outermost layer of the tears, the oily layer, which prevents evaporation of the water layer under it. Inflammation of these glands can decrease production and impair the quality of these very important oils! Dry eyes can be due to an inflammation of these glands ...(MGD) which leads to the inflammation of the ocular surface. Omega 3's are thought to help due to their anti-inflammatory properties. By improving the oily layer's quality, the eyes are able to retain a smoother surface of tears for a longer period of time. Food sources: Cold water fish (i.e. salmon, sardines, mackerel and tuna) Flax Seed, Chia, Hemp, Walnuts, Avocado, Algae oil What to look for? the active ingredients EPA and DHA Triglyceride form - absorbs better and less side effects like fishy burps In general, avoid omega 6 and 9 (tend to be pro-inflammatory) GLA (one type of omega 6 fatty acid) when in combination with EPA, is anti-inflammatory, so if taking a supplement with EPA and DHA the addition of GLA is a great! Anyone taking blood thinners should speak to their doctor before starting omega 3 supplements.
