The Robertson Library and Computers for Success PEI have provided the UPEISU with some devices, including laptops and desktop computers, to give away to student...s in need of technology to better access online courses. There is a limited quantity of devices and they are NOT brand new. Laptops have been wiped, have Windows 7 installed, standard web browsers, and LibreOffice. The UPEISU will give away these computers to students based on their need for the technology and the state of the technology they are currently using if they have any. The UPEISU, the Robertson Library, and Computers For Sucess PEI are not responsible for any issues associated with the giving away of any device. Your information, including name, student ID, and UPEI email will only be accessible to UPEISU staff for the purposes of application processing and laptop distribution. You will be contacted back if you are one of the laptop recipients in the Winter semester of 2021. To apply, please fill out this form: https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSdvXla_kr2pkRD4vi/viewform

UPEI Arts students! Faculty of Arts Student Town Hall Monday, August 3, 7-8 pm ADT via Zoom (Check your UPEI email for the link or email [email protected])... We invite all UPEI Arts students to a virtual Town Hall meeting to share their thoughts about returning to classes in September. As we now know, the Covid-19 crisis means that most UPEI courses will be delivered remotely in the fall. The Faculty of Arts wants to plan for this extraordinary term with your best interests at heart. So, in order to design accessible and engaging learning experiences, our instructors are eager to hear from you. We especially want to know how you plan to do your online work, what your concerns are, and what you really want faculty to think about as they make their course plans. If you can attend (and we know that no one time will work for everyone), RSVP to Shannon Murray ([email protected]). And whether you can attend or not, we’d love to hear in advance some of your suggestions, questions, and worries, so send those along to that email as well. We know this will be a challenging time not what any of us hoped September 2020 would look like -- but with your help, we will figure it out.

Dear Colleagues, here is some advice for those who have not created online lectures before (From George Jia): 1. Using PowerPoint and applying voice narration is one of the easiest ways to create an online lecture and to repurpose existing PowerPoint slides. The great thing about it is that you record lectures slide by slide, so correcting mistakes and organizing lectures is easy (so you can rerecord individual slides rather than the whole lecture). Creating drawings and high...lighting is straightforward, especially if you have a touch screen. PowerPoint files are viewable in most platforms, making it easily accessible. Also, lectures can be converted to many different video formats within the program. To start recording, open PowerPoint, select "slide show," and click "Record Slide Show." You could also record yourself in the webcam. Here is Microsoft's help link on the topic: https://support.office.com//record-a-slide-show-with-narra 2. If you have PDF slides, I recommend the screencastify add-on in Chrome browser, you can choose to record videos of a single tab (your pdf file) or the entire desktop. Again, making drawing and highlighting is easy. This is also great for illustrating how to use recourses on the web (such as showing students how to access publisher-provided study tools). Webcam recording is also available. The drawback is to get the full feature of the add-on, a small fee is required (I believe it is $29 US a year with education discount). Here is a link to the add-on https://www.screencastify.com/ 3. Another option is to use Windows' game recording option to record videos of your entire screen or a single program, along with your voices and webcam recording as well. Here is a short tutorial: https://www.onmsft.com//how-to-make-a-windows-10-screen-re 4. Lastly, for a live online lecture or meetings, the Google Meet (used to be called Hangout) from G suite is the best option. It is included in the upei university domain. A reminder: you often have to allow access to your webcam and microphone before using it. See more

Bell Let’s Talk Day is January 29UPEI is joining in to help create positive change UPEI is excited to participate once again on Bell Let's Talk Day. Our hope is thatby offering activities, supports, and services throughout the year we will build a culture of care that nurtures and celebrates mental health and wellness of everyone in the UPEI ‘family’. Mental illness affects people of all ages and from all walks of life. According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, ...one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health issue or illness in any given year. Over the past nine years, Canadians and people around the globe have joined in the world’s largest conversation around mental health on Bell Let’s Talk Day to reduce the stigma around mental health issues. In a recent survey conducted by Nielsen Consumer Insights in 2019, 84% of Canadians now say they are comfortable speaking with others about mental health, compared to only 42% in 2012. However, there is still work to be done to ensure all Canadians have access to the mental health support they need. This year, on Bell Let’s Talk Day Canadians are encouraged to share the actions, large and small, that they are taking to improve the lives of people living with mental health issues. That’s why UPEI is joining in on the 10th annual Bell Let’s Talk Day to help create positive change. From 10 am2 pm, UPEI will be hosting two Bell Let's Talk Swag, Info & Photoboothsone in the W.A Murphy Student Centre Concourse and one in the Robertson Library Breezeway. Staffed by UPEI volunteers, members of the campus community can drop by to grab a toque, snap a photo, add to the Bell Let’s Talk Wall, and join the conversation! From 11:30 am1:00 pm, the UPEI Student Union and the Office of the Vice-President Administration and Finance are hosting Soup for the Soul at the Chaplaincy Centre. Soup for the Soul began in 2015 as a way to offer healthy food in a comfortable environment. Round tables are conducive to conversation with mellow music adding to the atmosphere. Drop by for a warm bowl of soup with a roll (Real butter tops it all off.) Bell Let’s Talk Day at UPEI will be capped off when the UPEI Women’s Hockey team faces off against the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues at 7:00 pm in MacLauchlan Arena at the Bell Aliant Centre. Admission is by donation in honour of Bell Let's Talk, with proceeds going to the Canadian Mental Health Association PEI Division. Go Panthers go! When it comes to mental health, every action counts. On Bell Let’s Talk Day, for every text, mobile, and long-distance call made on the Bell network; tweet using #BellLetsTalk, social media video view; or use of the Facebook frame or Snapchat filter, Bell will contribute 5 cents more to Canadian mental health programs. Join in as we work together to improve the lives of Canadians living with mental health issues and help create positive change.
