Life has certainly changed recently for many of us, and we are adjusting to living differently. Stress and emotions are heightened, as is our tendency for self-blame and guilt. Let’s be kinder. Letting go of guilt is an act of self-compassion. Even though you might not know it, you’re already practising self-talk. Self-talk is basically your inner voice, the voice in your mind that says the things you don’t necessarily say out loud. We often don’t even realize that this running commentary is going on in the background, but our self-talk can have a big influence on how we feel about who we are. Negative self-talk makes you feel pretty crappy about yourself and the things that are going on. It can put a downer on ...anything, even something good. Positive self-talk makes you feel good about yourself and the things that are going on in your life. It’s like having an optimistic voice in your head that always looks on the bright side. It might not seem like much, but self-talk is a huge part of our self-esteem and confidence. By working on replacing negative self-talk with more positive self-talk, you’re more likely to feel in control of stuff that’s going on in your life and able to achieve your goals. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthclinic #positiveselftalk #bekindtoyourself #bekindtolittleyou #selfcare #innervoice #lookonthebrightside #practicekindness #bekind #compassion #anxiety #depression #depressionlies #trauma #CBT #DBT #psychology #psychologistsofinstagram #socialworkersbelike #psychotherapists #dietitiansofinstagram #toronto #fairmarcpsychology See more

There’s no denying that things will be different this year, but holidays don’t need to be canceled (or even minimized). There will be some things that you can’t do right now, but there are surely some that you can. You can still send sweets to your friends and family, make your favorite holiday meal, light the menorah, decorate gingerbread houses, and break out confetti poppers for New Year’s Eve. For the things you can’t do - brainstorm how to adapt them for COVID times. ... If you’re disappointed about holiday parties being cancelled, plan a small outdoor gathering, or come up with virtual games to play over Zoom instead. Feeling lonely because you won’t get to see your extended family? Round up your cousins to video chat while preparing your holiday meal. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthclinic #holidaymentalhealth #covidholidays #covidchristmas #pivot #psychology #psychotherapy #psychologistsofinstagram #socialworkersbelike #psychotherapists #combatloneliness #connection #myfavoritetherapist #toronto #fairmarcpsychology See more

Food is often an integral part of our holiday traditions, and for those of us struggling with food or body image, this can be challenging. Take a moment to expand your ideas of what food can provide. Did you know that hugging can reduce stress? Even though National Hugging Day is going to look a little different this year, the purpose of today remains to encourage people to show more emotion. Figuring out your emotions about the upcoming holidays can make things feel less overwhelming. Most people are feeling a lot of different ways at once right now, which is hard for our brains to process and understand. This year has been a difficult year for many reasons. That means that some of your distress is likely related to things other than the holidays. It is completely normal for you to be feeling a bit more emotional than usual right now. Take some time to sort ...through your emotions in whatever way is most productive for you - you can journal, talk to a friend, or just spend some quiet time alone thinking. Once you have a better idea of the specific feelings you’re experiencing, you can start making plans to cope with them. #covidholidays #holidayprep #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthclinic #therapy #recovery #selfcare #selflove #bekindtolittleyou #practicekindness #psychology #psychotherapy #psychologistsofinstagram #psychotherapists #socialworkersbelike #dietitiansofinstagram #myfavoritetherapist #toronto #fairmarcpsychology See more

We get it, change is hard. However, remember, change is a process, not an event. In therapy it can sometimes be hard to see the progress you're making towards the larger changes you're looking to make in your life. Celebrate the small wins along the way. Her clinical approach integrates... techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and compassion-focused therapy. Something to think about from our very own Dr. Stacey Schell. Are you in need of support or connection? Does the person you're speaking with feel safe? There can be some benefit to sharing a little something more with them. "It can definitely just be a default or a habit to respond by saying we’re 'good' or 'fine' and it’s not inherently wrong or problematic to do so. However, it can be interesting to examine why that’s our default (e.g., are there specific beliefs t...hat underlie it?) or what impact it might have on our relationships. It can also be interesting to try responding differently when we’re asked how we are, and see what it feels like, what follows that, etc." : @staceyschellpsych #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthclinic #behonest #reachout #safespace #practicekindness #itsoktonotbeok #connection #support #therapy #recovery #recoveryispossible #myfavoritetherapist #psychology #psychotherapy #psychologistsofinstagram #childpsychologist #toronto #fairmarcpsychology See more

Genuine, original, real, actual, true. These are all definitions of authentic. But what does it really mean to be an authentic person living an authentic life? Authentic people know themselves, are able to listen to their inner voice, can understand the complexities of their feelings, and are able to face up to the truth about themselves, no matter how unpleasant they might find it. The number one way authenticity gets derailed is when one does not trust their own inner k...nowing and instead relies upon others and the outside world to determine who they should be. Living authentically by knowing yourself, being able to understand, accept and express your emotions, follow your own intuition, and trust in your ability to make the right decisions for yourself and your life can have significant positive impacts on your health and well-being. : @peopleiveloved #authenticself #authenticity #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthclinic #CBT #DBT #therapy #recovery #askforhelp #knowyourself #trustyourself #liveauthentically #psychology #psychologistsofinstagram #psychotherapy #socialworkersbelike #psychotherapists #reducethestigma #myfavoritetherapist #compassion #practicekindness #selflove #acceptance #toronto #fairmarcpsychology See more

*While the holidays are often a difficult time for people experiencing loneliness, this year may be harder than most as COVID-related restrictions keep loved ones apart. One of the first things to remember is that it’s normal to experience loneliness right now, and you can take comfort in the fact that you're not alone in feeling this way. Read below for some tips on how to combat loneliness this holiday season. 1. Seek connections. It's harder to connect with people... these days, but it's not impossible. Make an extra effort to regularly connect with friends and family, even if it’s through the use of technology. 2. Find balance. Try to find structure in your days. Get out of the house and do things, even if that means just going for a walk outside. 3. Pursue healthy distractions. Focus on activities you enjoy to distract yourself. This doesn’t mean you should avoid how you're feeling in the long term, but this strategy can be helpful over a temporary period, such as during the holidays. : @morganharpernichols #youarenotalone #covidholidays #connection #balance #distractyourself #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthclinic #holidaymentalhealth #psychology #psychotherapy #psychologistsofinstagram #psychotherapists #socialworkersbelike #myfavoritetherapist #therapy #recovery #recoveryispossible #toronto #fairmarcpsychology See more

This year more then ever, it's important to remember that you are allowed to opt out of overwhelming environments. Keeping up with activities, staying positive and safely socializing can feel like a lot, especially with everyone's different comfort levels around COVID precautions. If, at any point, you feel overwhelmed or anxious, know that it’s perfectly fine to take a step back. Healthy boundaries are necessary for your mental health. One distress tolerance skill taught in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is mindful breathing. The next time you feel overwhelmed by painful emotions, or facing a situation that is out of your control, focus on your breathing as a way to help you regulate your emotions so you are better able to think clearly and problem solve. Breathe deeply into your stomach. Try to slow down the pace of your inhales and exhales. It can also help if you try to breathe out more slow...ly than you breathe in. Notice your breath going in out out. Notice it moving up and down your chest. Put one hand on your belly, and breathe deeply enough so that your belly rises when you breathe in and falls when you breathe out. Breathe several times in this way, feeling your belly rising and falling, the air passing in and out through your body. Breathe. : @morganharpernichols #DBT #dialecticalbehaviourtherapy #breathing #justbreathe #breathedeeply #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthclinic #emotionregulation #mindfulbreathing #psychologistsofinstagram #psychology #psychotherapy #socialworkersbelike #psychotherapists #myfavoritetherapist #mindfulness #bemindful #slowdown #anxiety #toronto #fairmarcpsychology See more

Have you ever found yourself dwelling on an insult or fixating on your mistakes? Criticisms often have a greater impact than compliments, and bad news frequently draws more attention than good. The reason for this is that negative events have a greater impact on our brains than positive ones. This is referred to as the negative (or negativity) bias, and it can have a powerful effect on your behaviour, your decisions, and even your relationships. Being aware of this bias... means that you can take steps to adopt a more positive outlook on life. Try to take a more mindful approach that involves being aware of your own tendency toward negativity and consciously elevating happier thoughts to the forefront of awareness. : @elise_gravel #negativitybias #negativebias #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthclinic #lookforthegood #focusonthegood #psychology #psychotherapy #psychologistsofinstagram #socialworkersbelike #psychotherapists #childpsychologists #therapy #recovery #recoveryispossible #toronto #fairmarcpsychology See more

Progress is not linear. We often want it to be and yet accepting that it isn’t can help our mindset. Remember that we often take a few steps back before we move forward. It’s in our stumbles, our failures, that we learn. Just because you have slipped up, does NOT erase all of the hard work you have done. You are not back at square one, but on your journey forward. In therapy sessions we will often write this graph out for people as a reminder of what progress actually looks l...ike. It’s messy. All over the place at times.
