November is Woman Abuse Prevention Month. Over 70% of our Family Service agencies receive provincial funding to help victims of violence and sexual assault. Many agencies also work with perpetrators through the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General-funded Partner Assault Program (PAR). /Ontario Community and Social Services

November is Woman Abuse Prevention Month. A big part of the work we do at FCC is helping to break the cycle of abuse by providing individual and group support to survivors, child witnesses and people who have used abuse in their relationships. We help survivors know they are not alone and teach perpetrators a better way.... Follow our feed and stories this month for stats, resources and information about signs of abuse and support available as well as the qualities of a healthy relationship. The numbers and severity of domestic violence incidents around the world and in our Region have been climbing since the Pandemic. Together we can educate and empower survivors and hold those using abuse accountable. SELF-CARE SUNDAY Going to therapy is self-care. Therapy addresses many of the barriers to personal growth and wellbeing.... Don't wait until you're in crisis to seek support. You are worthy of feeling seen, heard and understood. You are worthy of the hope and healing that comes from knowing you are not alone. While increased government funding is helping reduce barriers to therapy, community donations continue to fill gaps in service and allow us to keep innovating, educating and reaching vulnerable, isolated populations. Together we can ensure people get the help they need when they need it most. www.fcccnd.com to donate. "I wished I learned this sooner," this is what we consistently hear from men who attend our Partner Assault Response (PAR) program. Early intervention psycho-education programs are an essential part of breaking the cycle of violence and preventing escalation, repeat offenses and new victims. In our PAR program, we help men break free of the man box, challenge patriarchy's male entitlement and invite responsibility and healthy choices.... Our co-leaders are emotion coaches, communication coaches and accountability partners. An integral part of PAR is also our partner contact to ensure survivor safety and support. Preventing violence against women takes all of us. Investing in men's mental health and trauma support for male survivors and witnesses of abuse helps create a safer community for all of us. Follow our stories for links to male allies organizations and reach out if you want to support the work we do with men. . . . . #galtlove #cambridge #waterlooregion #breakthestigma #mentalhealthmatters #kwawesome #anxietyrelief #mentalhealth #mensmentalhealth #StrongerTogetherWR #griefsupport #psychotherapists #socialworkers #hope #breakthecycle #stopviolenceagainstwomen #womanabusepreventionmonth #maleallies

SELF-CARE SUNDAY We all deserve unconditional love and acceptance. But we learn to love ourselves by how we're treated and what is modeled for us. If you are struggling with showing yourself love, you may need to heal attachment wounds or the legacy of trauma.... We can help you with that. You can begin today by acting as if someone who loves themself. Which one do you choose? It might feel uncomfortable, not because it is wrong but because it's not familiar. Sit in the discomfort and do it anyways. Change takes time and practice. You are worthy of love. Imagine more people who've learned to love themselves. Imagine that love rippling out into our community. Imagine the difference in our homes, our classrooms, our neighbourhoods. That's the power of investing in community mental health. Share this post to spread the love. SELF CARE SUNDAY Boundaries are not mean They are an essential part of self-care... Boundaries are not selfish. They are self-preserving. Boundaries do not hurt relationships. They protect relationships from resentment and passive aggressiveness. But many of us were not taught boundaries. Many of us experienced boundary violations and were made to feel it was our fault. This lack of boundaries can be passed onto the next generation, making them more vulnerable to being violated or putting others' needs first. Setting and holding boundaries are skills you can learn. Counselling can help you reclaim your right to your boundaries and help you model respectful boundaries for your children. Counselling can help you learn to communicate assertively and take your power back. Boundaries don't make you a mean person. They help protect you and your children from mean people. We are here for you. Together we can break the cycle of abuse and help you honour your needs. Check out our stories this month for more tips on boundary setting and healthy relationships. Your past does not define you nor do your current circumstances determine what is possible for you. But healing takes time and often requires help. Some people because of socioeconomic circumstances are at a greater disadvantage by no fault of your own.... Let's even the playing field. Let's fight for equality and the dismantling of systemic racism. Help ensure everyone gets the help they need by donating to our mental health and addiction services. www.fcccnd.com While we can't change the past, together we can invest in a better tomorrow. As the numbers grow, so does our anxiety. We are all experiencing collective trauma which doesn't always bring out our best. Breathe and remember to be kind.... Be kind to yourself. These are not easy times. Be kind to others. Everyone is trying. Some are barely holding on. You are not alone. Admit your mistakes. Repair if you say something hurtful. Get help if you feel you are at risk of harming yourself or others. Shame grows in isolation. But when we share we realize we are not the only ones feeling this way or who've been treated this way or are struggling in this way. That's the power of vulnerable connections.... We see this power in our groups. As we release the shame, we can begin to feel worthy to honour what we need. Reaching out is not easy. But remember, you do not have to share your whole story with everyone. You get to decide who you tell and how much you share. And if you don't know where to start or have had your trust violated, we can help. You are not alone. SELF-CARE SUNDAYS Being is NOT a waste of time. Resting is NOT a waste of time. Playing is NOT a waste of time.... Creating is NOT a waste of time. Caring for yourself is NOT a waste of time. Many of us have a part within that pushes us to work hard and makes us feel guilty when we take a break. Rather than fighting with that part or letting it burn us out, there's a better way. You can use mindful curiousity to get to know it and the fears that are driving it. As we reduce the inner war and open up to these parts with compassion, they can soften. Therapy, especially Internal Family Systems (IFS) can help with this process. Investing in mental health agencies is an investment in the health and wellness of your community. Men are dying by suicide at an alarming rate. Impossible and unhealthy expectations about strength and success leave many men alone in their pain or lashing out against loved ones. In our men's groups, we challenge this toxic masculinity and invite men to see vulnerability as strength and support men to have healthy relationships. Men's mental health matters.... Let's break the stigma and celebrate men's vulnerability. Family Counselling Centre of Cambridge & North Dumfries 10.07.2020

Oct 4-10, 2020 is #mentalillnessawarenessweek In 2011, The Mental Health Commission reported "1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental health problem or illness in any given year and by the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 have or have had a mental illness." With the rise of social media and the loss, uncertainty and isolation of the Pandemic, these numbers are no doubt far greater. ... Tragically "About 4000 Canadians per year die by suicide; an average of almost 11 suicides a day." Statistics Canada, 2018* MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS NOW MORE THAN EVER! Here's ways you can make a difference in your community: Reach out for help if you're struggling. Model vulnerability and honesty about the human experience. Do not judge others. Learn about the facts and myths of mental illness. Share our posts. Vote for us for the Cambridge Times Readers Choice Awards. Donate towards our mental health and addiction recovery programs.
