World War I Hero Tommy Ricketts King George V bestowed on Ricketts the prestigious Victoria Cross. The Victoria Cross is the British Empire’s highest award for valour in the face of the enemy. While many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are familiar with the events which earned Ricketts the recognition, a lesser known fact is that he went on to become a prominent pharmacist. Following the war, he went on to graduate in the first class of Memorial University College in 1925. He then apprenticed as a pharmacist for T. McMurdo & Co., and settled into a life of dedicated service as a pharmacy owner from 1934 until his death in 1967. Ricketts is said to have passed away on-the-job, in his pharmacy.

IMPORTANT ADVISORY: We would like to inform our patients and Bell Islanders that in the event of a continued ferry captain strike, Family Drug Mart - Bell Island will remain closed on Saturdays until normal ferry service resumes. We encourage all patients with prescriptions due over the long weekend to contact the pharmacy ASAP in order to ensure that required medicines are dispensed before Saturday. Don’t forget that starting today, non-medical mask wearing will be mandatory in all indoor public spaces, including the pharmacy, in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Congratulations to the Class of 2020! Although this year has been a challenging one, our community is so proud of you all!

Yesterday, the Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Board granted pharmacies permission to lift the 30-day supply restriction put on prescriptions implemented to ensure adequate medication supply across the country. Going forward, it will be the responsibility of individual pharmacies and pharmacists to manage their medication supply. Over the next month, Family Drug Mart will slowly begin to dispense some medicines for a 90-day supply, where possible. This will be rolled out ...in a step-wise approach, as to prevent any further medication shortages associated with increased prescription volume. Please continue to be patient with your pharmacy team as we strive to ensure adequate medication supply for all patients. Due to medication shortages, some medicines may continue to be dispensed on a monthly basis out of necessity. For the time being, both inhalers and insulin will continue to be included in the list of medicines dispensed on a monthly basis. Please keep in mind that the intention of these measures is to ensure that everyone has access to necessary medicines. Pharmacists are responsible for the safekeeping of medications and maintaining public safety with regards to medication access. We take this responsibility very seriously and thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
