Our ewes are quite prolific. Meaning we have quite a few sets of triplets, the odd set of quadruplets and every now and then a set of quintuplets!! In order for all the lambs to receive proper nutrition we leave the ewes with 2 lambs then move any extras to the LacTec milk machine. The lambs stay with the ewe for 1-2 days, receive their colostrum and are then moved to the machine. Training the lambs to the machine is critical and we spend a lot of time ensuring they have fi...gured it all out. Some are super quick and others need a few days. It’s #farmfactfriday and today we’re talking sheep! Did you know that recently sheep production in Manitoba has increased due to demand for fresh lamb? For intensive sheep management a shed or barn is needed, especially during colder months. Fresh bedding and access to forage and feed grains help to keep animals comfortable. During lambing, extra time is spent in the barns with the ewes ensuring that lambing is a success. With a ewe averaging 1.3 lambs, this means that many have twins. It is essential that both lambs have sucked and received their first milk called colostrum.
