Do you have one of these on your property, a teeny tiny wasp nest? This is the first one I have seen this season, so its time to start looking. Inside is a Queen wasp laying her eggs while her first brood of all female workers (20 or so) build new walls, take down old walls and continue enlarging the nest as the queen lays more and more eggs. By the beginning of summer she will start producing male workers as well, and by the end of summer they will start to die off, which makes them aggressive and generally a nuisance. Let's not let it get to that point, let's take care of it now! ****ATTENTION**** queen wasps seen already this season. The queen is usually spotted in the spring. She will emerge from her hibernation and finds a place to make a small golf ball size nest to begin her colony. Wasps make their nests from chewed wood pulp and saliva, giving them distinctive papery walls. Nests are usually built in sheltered spots with easy access to the outside. You can often find wasp nests in wall cavities, roof spaces, under eaves, in bird boxes, sheds ...or garages. A mature nest in summer/fall can contain thousands of wasps. When they attack, most wasps, yellow jackets and hornets are aggressive and will sting REPEATEDLY.
