Check out this loving kohlrabi that food box member, Bailey, shared with me and the other members last week. Delicious, nourishing local food, both for our body and our hearts. #takeafatchance #organic #ygkfood #kohlrabifieldsforever

This is the real reason for having heavy equipment. Nothing more satisfying than seeing the kids faces after I've made a giant snow pile for them to play on, make tunnels through, or pretend it's a giant toilet? To be honest, I have a pretty good time playing on there too.... #takeafatchance #farmkids #fordfocus

I dont use Baby Blue much in the cold but when I do it's necessary to warm the engine up first. The block heater has shorted out and needs replacing so I've got to drain the coolant(first picture) down to below the heater (second picture). Then I need to pull the old heater out, clean the opening, put the new heater in(third picture), top up the coolant again then we're off to the races. This time of year is perfect for these sorts of jobs. #takeafatchance #organic #fordfocus #farmingisfixing

Greeeeeeeeeeat. But dont worry, climate change isn't real. No, wait, it is very real. These up and down temperatures and regular rainfalls are going to decrease survival in overwintered crops, increase soil erosion and will certainly have an effect on our insect friends (and enemies).... Not to mention the general mess it makes with the increase in mud. #takeafatchance #organic #ygkfood #climatecrisis

Farmer Josh doesn't just farm, he also spends some time helping to advocate for and support other small and mid-size farmers.

#Repost @acresofancestry Below is an excerpt from our forthcoming law review article, Acres of Ancestry: Restorative Land Justice for Pigford Legacy Farmers Through Movement Lawyering, regarding USDA illegality (document forgery, identity theft, and collusion with local developers), contested debt, and the racist criminalization of Legacy Farmer Harry Young from Owensboro, Kentucky. . In an interview eight years later with farmer advocate Eddie Slaughter, 88-year ol...d L.C. Cooper, when asked by Slaughter whether, in his view, the Black and the poor had equal justice protections under the law, responded in the negative, adding that Blacks never would have equal justice, not in America. . This assessment is illustrated in the case of elder farmer Harry Young, whose Utica, Kentucky family farm was unjustly foreclosed on and auctioned off in 2005. Elder Young had a signed document from an FSA official documenting that his loan was paid, but due to the alleged forgery by an FSA official, the farm was foreclosed on and sold at auction for $500,000. This sale price was far less than its value, since valuable mineral rights on the land, including coal reserves, were not included in the valuation of the property at auctionthe coal reserves were estimated to be at least $18 million. Elder Young, asserted that he never had the opportunity to have his day in court, while the government contended that he did, and was represented by counselone whom Elder Young never hired. Protesting FSA’s fraudulent acts against him, Harry Young fought for years to get his land backunsuccessfully. . Cover crops. Cover crops. Cover crops! Despite the -10's and what not they are still kicking although a bit more weathered than a few weeks ago. The first picture is oats, radish, and peas and that field is where I'll be growing vegetables next year.... The next photo is oats and peas that will have day neutral(ever bearing) strawberries planted in the spring. Picture 3 is a rather late broadcast seeded planting of fall rye where I had winter squash this year and that field will continue to be in cover crops until 2023! Photos 4 and 5 have barley, radish, peas and just radish and peas. Those two fields will be planted with june bearing strawberries in May. The second last photo is a triangular field with primarily radish but also peas that will be partially planted to asparagus next year. And I'm undecided on what else. Suggestions? And the final photo is of this years planting of june bearing strawberries. They will be mulched with straw in the next few weeks and then come late June they'll be loaded with delicious red berries! These covercrops will all go directly back into the soil where they will help feed the different bio digesters living down there, theyll prevent soil erosion, smother out both perennial and annual weeds, and so much more. Best tool a farmer has that benefits the soil, the crop, the farmer and the community. #takeafatchance #organic #strawberryfieldsforever #ygkfood #covercrops

Big thanks to Charlie from @sonsetfarm for giving Farmer Orrie a spin on the combine while harvesting organic corn for their cattle. (He looks sad in the 3rd photo but he's actually just avoiding the sun). After combining, we headed back to their farm to watch Big Farmer Orrie unloading the corn into their grain bin. And just before leaving we picked up some eggs for breakfast tomorrow with Farmer Andrea. Great friends. What a fun Saturday afternoon. ... #takeafatchance #organic #ygkfood #farmkids

I decided to buy a welder this fall. I havent done any welding since highschool but with the equipment piling up it seemed like a good purchase. I can already say that it's been worth it. I'm not the best welder by any means but I'm getting better each time. Thanks to @rootradicalcsa for lending me their welder extension cord so I could do some work on my manure spreader, which was just a bit too far away from the outlet. #takeafatchance #organic #farmingisfixing #welder

Testing out the new deck for our wagon. I think it passed all inspections. Even though typically used for hay this wagon's main purpose will be for transporting seedlings in and out of the greenhouse and then into the field. And probably for hauling kohlrabi .... #takeafatchance #organic #ygkfood #hemlock #kohlrabifieldsforever
