Finding True North Blog 02.10.2020

Hi Finding True North friends! A few of you have sent messages asking about the blog and if it's still running, so I thought I'd put out a little update. Finding True North is still active, though not as frequently because I no longer live in Iqaluit. Luckily, I have the opportunity to work and visit Nunavut often, and I still want to help bring great content from the territory to you - it just won't happen in the same way! For those of you who are interested, I am starting a... few new projects (blog, YouTube, and other creative works) in the coming months and I am really excited about them. Regular readers will definitely see some Finding True North all-stars in these projects, too, which is amazing. To stay connected, follow me on my personal Instagram account by clicking any of the photos below or going to http://instagram.com/anubhamomin. That's where I am doing most of my updates (especially via the story feature), and I will share my new website, channel, and Facebook pages once they are set up! best, anubha

Tonight in Iqaluit! Screening of a new doc about amazing musicians, including The Jerry Cans / Pai Gaalaqautikkut, A Tribe Called Red, Iva Music, and so many more. I had a chance to preview this film - you want to see it, trust me.

My "7-minute" #WalrusTalks presentation from last Saturday is online and ready for the sharing. I wrote my notes for the speech in the days before I went on stage, but these are the thoughts that have been floating through my mind (and intermittently on my blog) for years. This was a tough talk to give for many reasons, including the challenge of trying to articulate an experience that you're still navigating and processing. I am still working out my space and place, in Iqalu...it, in Canada, on this planet - and I'm not always batting at a thousand. And I accept that. It's exhausting but necessary to be uncomfortable, isn't it?

Prior to moving up North, I used to think being outdoorsy meant picnicking in Trinity Bellwoods Park. I didn't have the skills, experience, or inclination to take myself out of the city and deeper into this country. That changed, clearly, when I moved to Iqaluit and began trekking by foot or machine onto the tundra. What I found was this desire for adventure that had laid dormant until then, a longing to go outside my city, outside my comfort zone, outside myself. ***** @fin...dtruen has #partnered with @cibcnow in celebration of its 150th birthday to share what we love about Canada, and ask Canadians what it means to them to #StandForCanada. Use the hashtag to share your thoughts on Canada - what you love, what you desire, what it means to you - for your chance to be featured in their digital mosaic found at https://standforcanada.cibc.com See more

Have you ever been been to the floe edge, where the ice meets the water and the water meets the sky?

I think there are more #nunagram_winner photos from #pangnirtung than anywhere else in #Nunavut. On glance at this image from @michaelhdavies and it's not hard to see why. #nunagram

It's Black History Month, and the Nunavut Black History Society has a great lineup of events in Iqaluit throughout. Last year, I did my favourite series of interviews, ever, during Black History Month. Here is the first part of that series; read it if you haven't yet, read it again if you have.
