Thank you, Diana LPN.../FCN Edith RN/ FCN CAFCN Response to Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) The emergence of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 presents important practice considerations for all health care providers, and especially for foot care nurses. Foot care nursing often involves care for the elderly, many of whom present with multiple comorbidities; this population is at high risk of severe complications should they contract the COVID-19 virus. As foot care nurses practice in a number of areas hospital, community, long term care and retirement residences, in clients’ homes, or clinics, the risk of maintaining the chain of infection remains high. It is the responsibility of every health care worker, and of foot care nurses, to break the chain of infection whenever possible. Important factors to keep in mind: Meticulous hand hygiene practices remain imperative. Instrument re-processing must be completed as per IPAC-Canada, CSA and local Public Health Authority Guidelines Transportation and storage of instruments, clean or soiled, must be completed as per IPAC-Canada, CSA and local Public Health Authority guidelines Consistent, open and clear communication with any long term care, residential, clinic or hospital administration is essential Adherence to policies and procedures established by any long term care, residential, clinic or hospital administration is imperative Phone screening of clients prior to home visits may be helpful (see hyperlink below an Ontario resource but helpful regardless of jurisdiction) Daily monitoring of reports from national, provincial and local health authorities is important and informs practice.
