Betsy Elliott First Newfoundland Woman on the Moon! Flanker Press is very excited to announce that our very own author, Carolyn R Parsons, has taken her writing to new heights. As part of an unprecedented literary initiative, Writers on the Moon, her novel The Forbidden Dreams of Betsy Elliott (St. John’s: Flanker Press, 2019) will be going to the moon. With a tentative launch date of fall 2021, the digital payload carrying the written work of 125 different authors (and a ...considerable amount of stowaway work), a lander called the Peregrine Lander, built by an American company called Astrobotic, with a payload of scientific equipment and a bunch of great books, will be launched on a rocket called Vulcan Centaur by NASA toward the lunar surface. The literary time capsule will be encased in the lander and left on the surface of the moon for some future explorer to find. This digital library will contain works from around the globe and have the distinction of being the first of its kind on the moon. Carolyn R. Parsons Three Canadian writers have secured a place on the lander, but Carolyn is the only one from Newfoundland and Labrador. We have some fantastic news to share... The Woman in the Attic by Emily Hepditch has been long-listed for the 2020 BMO Winterset Award! The award is designed to celebrate and support Newfoundland and Labrador writers and writing, and to commemorate St. John's-born social historian Sandra Fraser Gwyn, OC, who did so much to promote a national awareness of the arts of this province.... The prize awarded to the annual winner is $12,500, while the finalists will each receive $3,000. The award project, managed by ArtsNL, has gained a quality of permanency by the generous support being provided by BMO, which has renewed its award partnership for another five years. Congratulations to Emily, and to all the authors for this recognition of your hard work and talent. http://www.nlac.ca/news/longlist2020.htm

Kenneth Pieroway will be doing a presentation tonight at The Rooms in St. John's about a time when streetcars transported St. John's citizens across town. His book, Streetcars of St. John's, features many then and now photos of the streetcars, the routes, and how those streets look today. Capacity is limited, get your ticket early to secure your spot. You can reserve your ticket online, at the front desk or by calling visitor services at 757-8000.

A poem I wrote about the Railway Coastal Museum: The Railway Coastal Museum One hundred and seventeen years I have stood... To honour those men who understood That railway blood is in my stone They know that their fight is not alone Robert Reid built me proud and tall Brick by brick I will not fall To countless men whose names I bear Of railway men through the years History will forever mark the day When many tried to turn away This heritage in a city bright To honour these men and their given right I drew life and breath from these men before Who rode the rails a thousand times or more Some gave their lives to dedicate A museum that now sees an uncertain fate I stand alone on this site To bond with those that take my plight We shall not waver in this senseless demand To close my doors because they can Author - Robert Hunt

Flanker Press Ltd. 14.10.2020

Author Robert Hunt has two titles currently available at Costco St. John's, The True Meaning of Christmas and The Bullet: Stories from the Newfoundland Railway. They're selling quick. Be sure and grab some while supplies last!
