Flying Stitches 01.06.2021

Flying Stitches is 1/2 open. In-person fittings for things that make you nervous to mark are available by appointment only. Please wear a mask, hand sanitizer will be required when you come in, all that good pandemic stuff! For everything else - that you know what needs to be done for - we shall continue with tag, bag and hang from my mailbox with a notification that you are coming and it is there. Weird is becoming the current normal.

The reveal. Newly minted teenager gets to revisit his childhood and sleep under it every night. Plenty of preparation goes into making a t-shirt quilt. His mom, Melissa, was in it for the long game when she started saving baby-clothes as he grew out of them. Baseballs were quilted everywhere that there was blank fabric needing nailed down.

The latest memory t-shirt quilt was made during January. It was done in tiny bits through palliative care and funeral things for my father-in-law. But, completed before the birthday it was for. It's photos will be posted after it is given. Below are recent makes. The item on the left is a knitting needle holder made for my sister-in-law's recent birthday. African block print Cotton reinforced with stiff interfacing. The curtains on the right are made from vintage bark cloth sourced by my vintage loving client. They were framed with a row of lace top and bottom to make the piece fit the window and lined to protect the fabric from UV light.

These photos came up in my memories today. Reposting with commentary. I consider that I have seen a bit of seasoning, and this is a signpost in my journey. Now, I have a few more things I consider before taking on one of these and will assure the customer that this kind of art is not cheap.

Getting things started up again. Ken's father lived with us and wanted to die at home. Things in the sewing area were abandoned out of necessity for the heightened activity upstairs. I promised my son's girlfriend, Joan, a new mask for Christmas. She wanted it personalized and makes a cute model.

A few of you have asked to see the Memory Quilts/ "bed art" I have been doing. The most recent that were for Christmas gifts are the first two. The rest are in no particular order. Many much loved, saved t-shirts went into these. I have learned some new techniques as the months have passed to make the smaller items work and nail down the larger pieces. Each one (except the blue checked one) represents over 100 hours of work by me and my helper, and about $300 of supplies I order to make it happen.
