What to expect at a Pedorthic Assessment Review of your medical and injury history it can be helpful to bring an older pair of shoes with you to look wear and to come wearing pants that can easily be rolled up Biomechanical exam (weight bearing and non-weight bearing), this is where things get hands on - range of motion tests, muscle testing, functional tests, identifying bony prominences, alignment, callusing, painful points, etc.... Gait Analysis we watch how you walk and move Treatment Options this may include stretching exercises, strengthening, off-the-shelf insoles, custom-made foot orthotics, footwear recommendations and modifications, and referrals to other practitioners Casting for custom foot orthotics (if recommended) Schedule orthotic pick-up and follow-up appointments. #FootByFootOrthotics #Pedorthist

Is it time for a change? Shoes wear out at different rates for different people but wearing old or worn footwear can contribute to pain and injury. As shoes wear they lose both their shock absorption and supportive qualities. But when do you know if they need replacing?... Just like car tires check the tread, it should be in good shape. The upper material part of the shoe shouldn't appear contoured, ripped or tipped If the area under the heel and ball of the foot has lost its cushioning than the midsole has compressed overtime. You may see some visible wrinkles in the midsole (the cushy part of the shoe) or it may feel 'flat' or less spongy/ cushioned. Typically you should expect to get 500 - 800 km out of a pair of shoes before they need replacing or 8 -12 months off regular wear as a general rule. #FootByFootOrthotics #HappyFeet #Pedorthist

Our bodies are pretty good at communicating! Calluses are hard areas of skin that often develop in response to pressure or friction. Calluses indicate where we tend to bear our weight. Callus formation is the body's way of protecting the foot's underlying tissue against excessive pressure; a built in defence mechanism essentially. Pressure can be due to an underlying cause such as abnormal foot mechanics, including bunions or hammertoes, or caused by mechanical stress, such a...s poor fitting footwear. #FootByFootOrthotics #HappyFeet #Pedorthist

Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome (Runners Knee) Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome (ITBS) is considered an overuse syndrome, often referred to as runners knee. The Iliotibial band is a long strong band of connective tissue that starts at the pelvis, runs over the hip and inserts just below the outside of the knee. The job of the Iliotibial band is to help stabilize the knee and hip during the motion of walking or running.... With repeated flexion and extension (bend and straighten) of the knee, the Iliotibial band can rub on the outside of the knee which causes friction, causing the band to become inflamed. Signs & Symptoms ITBFS creates a burning or aching pain, usually within 10 minutes of exercise, on the outside of the knee and can be tender if you apply pressure to the area. Causes A rapid increase in the training/running. Running on uneven surfaces or excessive downhill running. Excessive intoeing (pigeon toed). Bow legs. Overpronation (ankles rolling inward towards the ground) Leg length discrepancy (one leg shorter than the other). Over worn footwear - running/walking on uneven or angled surfaces Pedorthic Treatments Custom made Orthotics can be an effective method to help reduce friction on the Iliotibial Band. They are able to correct biomechanical impairments and redistribute the load to the foot in a different way in order to decrease the pull and friction on the Iliotibial Band. Proper footwear is also essential to your recovery. Talk to your Pedorthist about proper footwear choices for you. Other Treatment HEAT/ICE: heat 10-15 minutes on the hip area and ice on the outer knee to reduce swelling. OTHER TREATMENT: may include pain medication, physiotherapy, massage therapy, cupping, kinesio taping and foam roller therapy.

A bunion is a bony bump on the side of your foot beside your big-toe joint. Bunions are often a result from biomechanics, arthritis, trauma, heredity, or habitually wearing shoes that are too narrow in the toe. #bunions #halluxvalgus

Stretch when you can Muscles can become stiff and painful as you stand or walk all day. Stop every hour or so to stretch, relax, and lengthen tightened muscles. Calf raises help pump blood out of the foot (where it has pooled while you were standing) and back to the body. 1. Stand tall on the edge of a step or platform, with your abdominal muscles pulled in. 2. Secure the balls of your feet firmly on the step with your heels hanging over the edge.... 3. Raise your heels a few inches above the step as you stand on your tiptoes, and hold for a second. 4. Lower your heels back to even with the platform. 5. Repeat 10 times. Another great stretch is the runner’s stretch. 1. Face a wall and place your hands against it. 2. Extend one leg behind your body. 3. Push your heel to the floor as far as it will go. 4. Hold for a moment to feel the stretch and then switch sides. 5. Repeat three times on each leg. See more

#footbyfoot Did you know that November is Diabetes Awareness Month: Check Your Feet! The number of people living with diabetes is on the rise in our country, with millions of cases undiagnosed. Because of that, awareness is vital to the prevention and management of this debilitating disease. Diabetes impacts all organs of the body, but the effects on the feet make this disease toe-tally worse! Consistently high blood sugars circulating throughout the body can cause changes to... the skin, nails and blood flow, and can decrease sensation in the feet, causing patients to be more susceptible to diabetic foot ulcers, infections and deformities. The combination of abnormal foot structure, nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy), and a decreased ability to heal due to high blood sugars can cause infected ulcers, which may lead to amputation. But there is good news all of the complications mentioned above can be prevented! It starts with properly managing your blood sugar and having a great healthcare team endocrinologist, primary care physician and a pedorthist. Our top tips that you can start today at home include: Inspect your feet daily. Never go barefoot. Make sure to check your blood sugar regularly. Make sure to wear shoe gear that fits appropriately. If you notice increased redness, pain or swelling to your feet, call your pedorthist immediately or report to the emergency room. See more
