*** MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH *** In a time when we cannot see friends and family like we used to, some might be struggling to find ways to stay connected. Sure, the video chats, virtual dance parties and games nights were fun at first. But with the heaviness of the last few months all these high-tech solutions have begun to lose their shine. So how can we reconnect with ourselves and others in genuine ways? How can we nourish our minds and lift our spirits?... IT'S ALL ROOTED IN ART!!! According to many mental health agencies, the pandemic has affected our mental health. Anxiety, sadness and depression have increased. It has become easier for many of us to get caught in a loop of despair. When hope seems to be lost, we need to remember, now more than ever, that good things still exist in the world. Creativity can ease stress and help us process the heaviness that we're dealing with. Creating something can help us nurture our inner artist and help us find some peace. We all are innately creative. Expressing ourselves visually is human nature. Sometimes when the verbal side of our brain cannot speak out our visual side can. When we are creating art, whatever form we choose, we get into what's called a 'flow state'. This is a period of optimal attention. During this time we are in the zone and completely focused on the task at hand. We don't worry about time, or any other needs. Working on a creative project can be euphoric. Another benefit of being creative is that we can use it to come up with new ways to connect with people. Creating something for someone else is not about gain or reward. Just knowing that the recipient will feel good when they get it is reward enough. Making someone else smile makes us feel good too. When you can think outside of yourself, it opens you up and broadens your perspective. When you can open up and look outside of yourself, you will understand that what we're going through is a shared experience - and knowing that other people understand what we're feeling helps us all feel better. *** CANADIAN ARTIST SERIES & ART CHALLENGE *** Isabel McLaughlin ( 1903 2002 ) Isabel was a Canadian visual artist, patron, and philanthropist. She was an early Modernist Canadian painter specializing in landscapes and still life with a strong interest in design.... Born in Oshawa, Ontario, Isabel was the 3rd of 5 daughters to the founder of General Motors of Canada, President Col. Robert Samuel McLaughlin. She studied art at the Ontario College of Art between 1925 and 1927. Isabel was recognized as a talented artist from early in her career. She was an invited participant in the Group of Seven exhibition in 1931. Isabel studied in Paris in 1929, in Vienna in 1930 and with Hans Hofmann from 1947 to 1952. In 1933, Isabel was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters. She served as its 1st woman president in 1939. She was also a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, as well as an executive member of the Heliconian Club in Toronto. Isabel was the recipient of the Order of Ontario in 1993 and the Order of Canada in 1997. Isabel died in 2002. ART CHALLENGE - Today the challenge is to pick one subject to concentrate on. A tree, a person, an item, a place....whatever you want and start creating a piece with that subject. Work slowly. Try different mediums or techniques. Work on this piece over a period of time.
