The Applied Sustainable Ranching program in Williams Lake has funding available for Indigenous students to earn a certificate that involves learning how to run a ranch business using traditional Indigenous and Western land practices. We issued a news release on April 22, for the next intake that was to start May 3, and one media outlet picked up the story. No students have come forward to sign up for May, and only two have shown interest so far for September. It’s a great opportunity, with students being able to live and work on a ranch while taking the program by distance. The program is relevant for ranches, but also community gardens and greenhouses.

The 2021 Census is almost here! As you know, census data are critical to decision makers and Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Statistics Canada remains committed to support First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities, governments and organizations with evidence-based decision making. We provide accurate and detailed sociodemographic data to inform public policy and program development. Information from the 2021 Census will be even more crucial because it will help all l...evels of government to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and to better plan for the future. In Indigenous and remote communities, Statistics Canada is hiring locally and will be collecting data with the full engagement of community leadership. Census collection will begin on May 3, 2021. Statistics Canada has adapted the collection process to ensure that all Canadians and our employees remain safe while participating in this vital national exercise. Data collected in the 2021 Census will inform many of the economic and health-related policy decisions that must be made by all levels of government in the coming months and years, as the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the lives of Canadians. In cases where a Statistics Canada census employee is sent to a dwelling for non-response follow-up, a new no-contact protocol will be followed. Under this protocol, no interviews will be conducted inside the respondent's dwelling. These interviews will instead be physically-distanced and the census employee will be required to wear a mask, and follow all public health guidelines.

Chief Gale participated in the Infraintelligence discussion series on Funding Indigenous Megaprojects. Many of Canada’s Indigenous communities are in need of new infrastructure, from water assets and better roads to stronger schools and clean energy. New partnerships between First Nations communities and asset developers are leading to some of Canada’s most incredible assets, assets that can be maintained by the communities they serve. This ability for the community to work o...n infrastructure assets, both in the short-term and long-term, is a key for economic development. How do we use these recent successes to encourage more asset development in these remote communities? And how do we ensure that capital is available for these projects to move forward in a timely fashion? https://www.crowdcast.io/e/indigmegaprojects
