The experiences we have throughout our lives impact how we attach and relate to others in both positive and negative ways. Relationships are key to our survival and influence how we perceive and behave in the world around us. As a baby we are immediately questioning, Is the world safe? Can we trust this person? Can this person provide safety, food, shelter? Can they calm me? Can they make me feel better when I am upset? If yes, I feel secure, wanted, safe, and loved. If not,... I cannot trust you, you are not safe, people are not safe, you cannot meet my needs emotionally or physically. As we grow we desire acceptance and support from the people around us like, daycare providers, friends, teachers, peers, family members, parents, foster parents, adoptive parents, leaders, and even strangers. We receive messages like you matter, you are unworthy, you are amazing, you are embarrassing, you are bad, you are not good enough, you are loved, etc. We internalize these messages and they formulate our adaptive and maladaptive thoughts and behaviours. These influence how we engage with others, maintain relationships, regulate emotions, care for and nurture others, create trusting and secure relationships, play, accept love and kindness, love ourselves, handle crisis, provide structure, create appropriate boundaries, and more. It is never too late to build positive connections, secure attachments, safety, trust, shared joy, and self worth in ourselves and the ones we love.
Try this Sing this song to someone you care for at any age and see how easy it is to create self-esteem, confidence, self-worth, and shared joy. Therapeutic Play #theraplay #counselling #therapist #childhoodtrauma #childhoodmemories #innerchild #innerchildhealing #twinkletwinklelittlestar
Raising a child can be the hardest thing you ever do in life. There are Ups, Downs, and All Arounds. Back-offs and Stand-offs. Love me, hold me, get away from me. How do we create a connection? How do we repair a connection when there’s residual tension or resentment towards our child? How do we love a child who doesn’t accept our love? Terrible twos and terrible you’s up to adulthood. It’s hard. I’m trained in Theraplay and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy which are attachment based therapies to address those disconnects and challenging behaviours by creating joyful moments while building trust, safety, confidence, and a positive connection.
