I have added a post to the blog about an article in the Toronto Globe and Mail of 23rd April featuring Cedarvale Park and Ravine, with a photo of Eric Davies on the ravine slope. It also covered spring blossoms, including our own Japanese cherry blossoms, which are still blooming: www..friendsofcedarvale.wordpress.com/blog John Cummings

Canada's most famous groundhogs all agreed on an early spring and it looks like this little one concurs! #DYK Groundhogs rely on fat reserves to stay alive while they spend the winter in a comatose state in their underground dens. As soon as they emerge from hibernation they mate, followed by three to five young after a typical gestation of one month. : Michelle Hilscher ... On February 28 we received a report of shots fired toward coyotes in the park in the vicinity of Strathearn Road and Glen Cedar Road. The shots, heard in two separate incidents on February 14 and 27, are believed to have been from a BB gun. Firearms, including airguns, are prohibited in City parks. Killing, attempting to kill, maiming, injuring, trapping or disturbing wildlife without a permit is prohibited in #TOParks. Animal Services and Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreati...on have advised us that it is appropriate to contact Toronto Police if you witness shots fired at a coyote (9-1-1 at the time of the incident, otherwise call the non-emergency number: 416-808-2222). Coyotes are a natural part of our ravines. They generally do not pose a danger to people and help to control rodent and rabbit populations. If you spot a coyote near or on your property, there is likely a food source nearby. If you wish to deter a coyote from entering your yard, avoid feeding pets outdoors, store garbage, recycling and organics properly, and remove dense brush and weeds to minimize hiding spots. Coyotes are naturally timid and typically flee when confronted with shouting and aggressive gesturing. If you wish to report a coyote sighting, you may do so by calling 416-338-PAWS (7297), or email [email protected].
