An Abridged Sonic History of Global Conflict "In 2015, a controversy raged around the Calgary band then known as Viet Cong, and their decision to adopt a name so fraught with trauma, violence, nationalism, and imperialism. In observing the controversy, I contemplated both the costs of such a choice, and the rock music traditions of which it is the obvious result. "An Abridged Sonic History of Global Conflict" is the resulting compilation of musical bands named for wars, inc...luding acts of war, armed uprisings, military figures, and siege weapons. As I continue to grow my list of these through research, I use that history to inform my choices as I design an embroidered patch for each, grouping them by relevant conflictthe Vietnam-American War, World War I, the Postwar Period, and so on. They are thus reconnected to the violence of their etymologies. After all, patches are how we demonstrate our belonging and our position within a subculture, whether as a Private First Class or as a fan of obscurely niche death metal...while the bodies they adorn onstage in a rock show (young adult, mostly male) are the same bodies we traditionally send to kill and die (young adult, mostly male)." - Lee Henderson Installation photograph . . #jnaag #jnaagexhibition #Anabridgedsonichistoryofglobalconflict

Don't forget to register, space is limited! Virtual Art & Ideas Enthusiasm and Understanding: Lawren S. Harris and connections beyond the "Group" with Alex Blair April 22, 2021 at 7:00PM... The Group of Seven had incredible influence over artists of their time and were in ongoing contact with artists that would not gain as much fame as them, especially their female contemporaries. This lecture, presented by Alec Blair, will focus on Lawren Harris' influence on female artists like Anne Savage and Doris Mills with special attention to the correspondence between Harris and Emily Carr. Rare surviving letters, generously provided by Harris' grandson Stu Sheppard, and references from Carr's journals form the basis of this exploration of how Harris may have shifted Carr's focus and methodology. Alec Blair is the director and lead researcher for the Lawren S. Harris Inventory Project. Working with Stew Sheppard of the Harris estate, he has consulted for private and public galleries, documentary films and auction houses on the work of the artist, and is working to catalogue and produce a database of his work, intended to be available to the public in the future. The project has amassed the most complete existing inventory of Harris works to date, with images and information for more than 1,300 pieces. Blair is also a landscape painter and works as a lecturer in the University of British Columbia Geography department, teaching courses on environment and sustainability. . Register now at: https://www.jnaag.ca//progra/lecture-series-art-ideas.aspx . Registration closes April 20. This program will be hosted live on Zoom. . . #jnaag #jnaagathome #artandideas

Harris' work and methods with Alec Blair April 15, 2021 at 7:00PM... Major paintings from the JNAAG permanent collection will be placed into the context of Harris' career and compared to relevant sketches and drawing which expose compositional changes and provide hints towards his changing style. From The Vault Viven Howard Lily Pond, c. 1928 oil on canvas ... From the collection of the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery Gift of the Sarnia Women's Conservation Art Association . Sometimes artist biographical information is difficult to locate, depending on their career and exhibition history. Below is a short account of Viven Howard's life as documented in the permanent collection archives. "Born in Glencoe, Ontario. Graduated from McMaster University around 1910-11. Enlisted for war, but refused as being too old. Taught school in Alberta for several years. There he became interested in art, particularly watercolours. Lived in Monterrey, California in the early 1920's in the house of Robert Lewis Stevenson, with six or seven other artists. The painting in the permanent collection represents the pond at Stevenson's house. Exhibited in San Francisco while living in California. Viven Howard was a friend of Norman Gurd, A.Y. Jackson and Varley." Excerpt from a document that captures a conversation with Howard's sister-in-law, Mrs. Smith. . . . #fromthevault #permanentcollection #vivenhoward

Introducing Z'otz* Collective ... Ode to the Inside Out Questions Z'otz* Collective Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano and Ilyana Martínez... October 2, 2020 - March 7, 2021 Taking its name from the Mayan word for bat, Z’otz* Collective consists of three artists with Latin American roots: Nahúm Flores (Honduras), Erik Jerezano (Mexico), and Ilyana Martínez (Mexico/Canada). For over fifteen years, these artists have worked collaboratively out of a shared Toronto studio on drawings, paintings, collages, sculptures, and site-specific installations. "Their process includes passing work between each other to create authorless art with a dreamlike quality. It’s impossible to tell which artist contributed what; the mix of ink, watercolour, pen, and paint seamlessly bleeds together to create a textured fabric which sits on top of the page. A tiny Z’otz* stamp performs the role of a collective signature: a figure bent over with its arms swung high behind them, as if it were submitting headfirst to the power of art. The imaginations of Flores, Jerezano, and Martínez, now extend to the viewerthe fourth collaborator who naturally projects a narrative onto the art." Z’otz* Collective has exhibited widely, participating in over 25 solo exhibitions and 40 group exhibitions in Canada, Mexico, the United States, Serbia, and China.
