WARNING: RANT ALERT PART TWO: THE RECKONING Here's a follow-up to my post back in May of last year. (For those not familiar, check out my post "WARNING: RANT ALERT" below. Great reading.) So the customer finally got their day in court. And I was there. With bells on.... The customer had paid the contractor $6000.00 for the contracted work, which was awful. When she asked for a discount, the contractor refused. So she sued, and submitted quotes to the court to replace all of the work and repair all the damages done by the contractor, to the tune of $11,450.00. The contractor argued that the work was fine, submitting grainy black and white photos of the completed project, and stated the customer must have been satisfied, as they paid in full (when the workers were leaving with their hand out demanding payment). He also counter-sued for $1200.00, stating he should have charged her more. (What? Really?) I was called as a witness to offer my professional opinion on the work done. I took the stand by the horns, and sang like a canary. I'm surprised the judge didn't cut me off at some point saying, "Okay, we get it! It was terrible!" Armed with 20+ pages of clear colored photos of the details of the work, I made it quite clear what was wrong and what should have been done. So what was the outcome, you say, on the edge of your seat? The judge accepted the photos, the quotes to repair/replace, and my expert opinion on the work done, and awarded the customer a judgement of $11,450.00 plus her $100.00 small claims fee. He dismissed the counter claim outright. You may be standing up cheering right now (like I did in the courtroom) for the victory in justice, however the customer now has to actually get the money. As of a month ago, she still hasn't received anything, and the onus is on her to go through channels to attempt to collect. I'm hoping she eventually gets it, or at least a sizable amount. But I hope more than anything that this contractor is no longer in a position to do the same thing to another customer. This one really got under my skin. As a business owner, I consider it a privilege to be given a contract from a customer. They're basically saying, "We trust that you will do a good job and we welcome you into our home to make it better". So when a contractor puts a customer through the wringer like this, it bothers me a lot. This particular customer now has to wait to get her money back before she can fix all the issues. So every morning she walks in to her kitchen and sees what this guy did to her. Unacceptable. As I've said many times before, a cheaper price does not mean a better deal. Many companies out there will beat anybody else's price just to get the sale, but then what? If they're not making much profit on your job, do you think you'll be getting their best? WARNING: RANT ALERT! And so once again I got a call from a customer looking for a price to replace what another company just installed for her. I went to have a look, and I have to say, in my 18 years in this field, I have never seen such shoddy and disgusting work. Granite countertop that didn't fit, 3/8" gaps filled with...grout maybe, chunks glued back in place (right beside the sink, like you'll ever see it there...), cracked backsplash tile, gaps around the plugs, plugs... loose, dangling live electrical wires behind the dishwasher ( that one's my favourite, what with the small children running around), and substantial damage to cabinets and walls. So what happened? The customer thought she was saving about $3000 by going with this company. The company demanded payment in full upfront (really?) to the tune of $6000 and now says there's nothing they can do. And so now the homeowner has to take them to court, lose time from work, not to mention go through the entire tear up all over again to get what she wanted. As I've said before, a cheaper price does not mean a better deal. Many companies out there will beat anybody else's price just to get the sale, but then what? If they're not making much profit on your job, do you think you'll be getting their best? Our economy has definitely slowed a lot, and many companies are experiencing a sharp decline in sales. So am I. But I refuse to let that affect the quality of the product and service that I offer. You get what you pay for. If it's too good to be true, it probably isn't. These phrases have been around forever, but still ring true. So watch out for the "great deal" out there. Do your homework. Shop smart. Spend wisely. These past two years we have seen a noticeable decrease in the new housing and renovation market, mainly due to consumers being more reserved with their spending. One of the most common kitchen questions we get is this: What's the difference between Granite and Quartz anyway? For years, Granite was the stone of choice for premium counter top. It was considered a durable, solid and high-caliber option for those looking to upgrade from a laminate. ... The main differences between the composition of Granite and Quartz is that Granite is harvested as a solid stone and cut and polished to form the dimensions needed. Quartz on the other hand is manufactured from crushed quartz and formed and solidified in the production stages. The issue with Granite is that it is a porous material and requires sealing each year in order to preserve its form and durability. As well, being solid stone, it's not unheard of for Granite to eventually yield cracks along the natural patterns of the stone. With Quartz, there is virtually no maintenance. You get the same polished stone appearance as Granite, with no sealing required. As a non-porous material, you lessen the chance of bacteria and chemicals penetrating deeply into the surface, causing any deterioration or unsanitary conditions. You'll find the two options are priced similarly, if not the same. One requires maintenance, the other is essentially maintenance-free. As an added bonus, Quartz comes with a life time warranty!
