This week, we were inspired and motivated by Paulo Carmini’s talk. Carmini, GBC ESL Alumnus and the VP and GM of the Global Strategic Business Group at Herman Miller, connected with our students and GBC staff from different departments to share his insights about Success Despite Current Challenges. We will share soon clips highlighting his remarkable speech. In the meantime, we would like to share a concept that Carmini promotes and that was the centre of one of his visits to... the School: Growth Mindset. This was what he told Level 8 & 9 students in May 2019. Don’t give up. Cultivate a Growth mindset. Take actions. Always be kind. Write down how you see yourself in five years. These were some of the main takeaways students went home with in May 2019 after Paulo Carmini's presentation. Mr. Carmini studied at GBCESL over 30 years ago when he first came to Canada, and today he is the Vice President & GM of Global Strategic Business Group at Herman Miller, which is a multinational company that designs and produces high end office and home furniture. On that day, Mr. Carmini, originally from Brazil, connected with students by sharing struggles that he and his wife faced as immigrants. Struggles that many of us experience nowadays: learning a new language, missing our families, getting used to the weather, overcoming financial difficulties, finding a job, and so on. He emphasized that one of the first steps to becoming successful is to envision ourselves as successful. I want you to do something. Go home and write down a story you want to tell about yourself in five years, Mr. Carmini told students. He remarked that this story must be placed where you can see and read it regularly. Then, take action! There are two actions that are based on the Growth Mindset idea: Assess! Think of where you are now and where you want to see yourself in the future. Here is when you should write your own story. Improve! You are your most important project: Prioritize two areas you feel are important for your growth and take action. So, let’s apply the first call to action. Tell us how you see yourself in five years! As Mr. Carmini stated on that day, remember that You always win or learn, never lose. You only lose if you don’t learn from the experience. Clocks in Ontario have been moving forward and back twice a year since 1908. It changes as part of the Daylight Saving Time, and it happens in spring and fall. That’s why the Daylight Saving Time is also called Spring Forward or Summer Time, and then Fall Back or Winter Time, though officially it is called DST. The very first time that Ontario applied the DST was on Wednesday, July 1st, 1908. At midnight on that day, clocks were turned forward 1 hour. Two months later, on S...eptember 1st, 1908, the time went back 1 hour. Other locations in Canada soon followed the measure. According to the Time and Date website, about 40 percent of countries worldwide use it to make better use of daylight and to conserve energy nowadays. The site also states that the next Daylight Saving Time will be on March 14th, 2021, and it will be at 2 AM. Does the time change in your home country? Tell us in the comments section! Being hopeful, optimistic, resilient, creative and flexible has never been more important than now. Those skills are essential in every aspect of your life because they reflect the ability to quickly respond and adjust to constant changes like the ones we face in this new reality. Recently, the Student Success Team attended an engaging and helpful GBC virtual Career Conversation session where experts talked about the importance of creating career agility. It is so helpful for... your career path and life that we would like to share four points that can help you develop career agility. Your path. Think about what is important to you, what will motivate you to learn and grow in your professional path. Your brand. What would you like to be known/recognized for? The answer to this question can help you identify your interests and motivations. Your allies. Here’s when networking is crucial. All kinds of allies can help you not only on building exposure but also finding people who can be your mentor in your professional path. Your goals. Define clear goals and think about what you need (skills, experience, connections, etc.) to help you achieve them. In short, a growth mindset and self-awareness are essential in developing career agility. We'd like to end this post with a question the facilitator posed during the session and that one of our colleagues ended his notes with: Am I better today than I was yesterday? *With notes from Amalia Ocejo and Adib Moussa, GBCESL Student Success Coaches Visual by Amalia Ocejo #gbcesl #gbc_esl_goes_online #gbceslstudentsuccess #workshopsonline #learningenglish #englishtips #englishworkshops #October2020 #studyabroad #careeragility #professionaldevelopment #careerpath

This week, people in Canada are wearing a poppy on their jackets. This is a symbol of Remembrance Day, a date dedicated to remembering and honouring members of armed forces who died in the line of duty in the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War, Peacekeeping missions and in Afghanistan. This year, the traditional commemorative ceremonies will be online. You can watch them on the City of Toronto’s YouTube channel. On its website, the City has also published n...ine ways that you can commemorate this day on your own. Here are three of them: Wear a poppy. Pause on November 11 at 11 am for two minutes of silence. Last Tuesday, many of us joined the virtual talk ‘Success Despite Current Challenges’ by Paulo Carmini. He is a GBC ESL alumnus and the VP and GM of the Global Strategic Business Group at Herman Miller, which is a multinational company that designs and produces high-end office and home furniture. During the talk, Carmini used the expression the bottom line to highlight an important factor during this new reality. We are dealing with a pandemic, it’s not news. What’s is som...ething that I want you to reflect on is the fact that the last time we had a pandemic was 1918. The reality is that there are very few people alive who have experienced these two pandemics. The bottom line is we are all learning as things have evolved since January this year. According to the Collins Dictionary website, "bottom line" is a noun and in a decision or situation, (it) is the most important factor that you have to consider. This noun has other uses that you can learn by visiting online dictionaries like Collins, Cambridge, Merriam Webster, and others. In your case, how would you use this noun in a sentence? George Brown College School of ESL 20.08.2020

Oct 2020 is the month of two moons! As we start off the month of October with an #attitudeofgratitude leading up to Thanksgiving, here's something to be grateful for: October will be 'bookended' by full moons!! October's first full moon, the harvest moon, is tonight, Thursday, October 1st, and the second full moon, or blue moon, will occur on October 31: a full moon on Halloween!!! 'Harvest Moon' is the name given to the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal equinox a...nd will appear full for about 3 days, according to Nasa. And October will close with a rare full blue hunter's moon. Have you ever heard the expression 'once in a blue moon?' Well, here's why we use that expression. While the moon won't actually look blue, the second full moon that occurs in one month is usually referred to as a blue moon. This happens every 2.5 to three years, or "once in a blue moon." Typically, the next moon after the harvest moon is known as the hunter's moon -- when hunters used moonlight to hunt prey and prepare for winter. What's more, while a blue moon seems rare, a full moon on Halloween across time zones is even more rare--the last one happened in 1944. But wait--there's even more reason to keep your eyes on the sky: tomorrow night, on October 2, you might spy a vibrant red star to the upper left of the harvest moon, or just above the moon if you look later at night-- it's actually Mars, which will be closest to Earth on October 6th and won't be that close again until 2035. Speaking of eyes, the photo credit goes to an incredibly talented Toronto photographer with an excellent eye @diane.e.walton

This month, some GBCESL students got job interviews, and they did fantastic as they had practiced during our Speak Up and Every Day English workshops. Those workshops -addressed to help students enhance their communication skills and to boost their self-confidence when speaking in English- include activities related to job interviews. For instance, students practice how to answer questions such as "Tell me about yourself" or "Walk me through your resume" that are know...n as behavioural questions. One of the techniques used to answer those and other common job interview questions is called the SAR method, which we would like you to practice and incorporate in your speaking. SAR is an acronym for Situation, Action, and Result. The method is also known as STAR or START. The first T is related to a "Task" and the last one for "Take away." Let’s focus on the most common one: SAR. According to a GBC Career Service document, these are the ways to use the SAR strategy. Situation. Describe the situation you will talk about. Be specific, not general or vague. Action. Describe the actions you took. Result. Explain what happened as a direct result of your efforts. Results should focus on positive outcomes. This technique can be also used when telling a story or anecdote to a friend or a family member. Remember, practice is the way to master any subject. It’s also can help you boost your self-confidence and get ready to face an interview. Join our workshops and tell us your stories and job interview experiences. At the beginning of his journey, Paulo was in the same situation you are, studying English at the School of ESL, George Brown College. He was a GBC ESL student full of hopes and dreams just like you, and he will walk us through his journey and tell us how he successfully overcame numerous challenges and fears that are so familiar to new immigrants and international students, especially during such times of uncertainty. Even though he is extremely busy in his position at Herman Miller, Mr. Carmini makes time to volunteer and give back to the School of ESL. In less than 3 years, this is his third time connecting with our students and sharing his success story with our diverse community. Don't miss out on this motivational and engaging talk. Hi folks! Thanksgiving is just around the corner so let’s dedicate this week’s idiom to it! Turkey has a crucial role in many Thanksgiving celebrations. To be more precise, it’s often the main dish! It also appears in some idioms like To go Cold Turkey, which means to quit a habit, especially a bad one, suddenly. Check this example out: He went cold turkey a year ago and hasn't had smoked since. You may come across another form of this idiom To quit something cold turkey.... See this example: I'm so impressed that you quit sugar cold turkey and haven't had a craving since! Let us know in the comments section if you have ever gone cold turkey! You can also tell us at our first virtual GBCESL Thanksgiving, this THURSDAY, October 8th at 12:30 PM. See you soon on ZOOM! Celebrating the harvest and giving thanks for a successful bounty of crops has been a long-standing tradition throughout North America by Indigenous Peoples. Today, Thanksgiving traditions continue and are generally seen as an opportunity to give thanks for what we appreciate in our lives, celebrate nature’s bounty and beauty, and enjoy a big meal with family and friends. Expressing thanks and showing our appreciation are much needed during these trying times of physical di...stancing. As our growing multicultural community prepares to celebrate this wonderful Fall holiday, we encourage you to take a moment and think about all the things you are grateful for in your life. Highlights of Canadian Thanksgiving: Canadian Thanksgiving takes place on the second Monday in October. Canadians get the Monday of Thanksgiving off work in most parts of the country - except in PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador where it remains an optional holiday. Canadian Thanksgiving revolves around family, sharing, making delicious and warm food. Despite the fact the holiday falls on Monday, families eat on different days of the weekend. This season you will hear people saying this famous Albert Camus’s sentence: Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. Many will also take pictures of themselves surrounded by stunning yellow, orange, brown, and red trees. But, have you ever wondered why leaves change the colour before falling? The answer can be a bit long, but we tried to summarize it in this way. Do you remember your science teacher explaining that light is converted into chemical energ...y, which is stored in sugars and converted into food? Well, this process has a vital role in the leaves’ colour. Why? According to the Treecanada.ca website, leaves contain ‘chloroplasts’ that produce food for the tree, the photosynthesis process. Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll that gives leaves their green pigment. That process is fully favoured when the sun shines. However, there is less sunlight during Autumn because the days are shorter, so leaves can’t produce food for the tree. That’s when leaves start to turn from green to red, orange, yellow or brown colour. These pigments emerge in leaf cells to protect chlorophyll from damage, the Treecanada.ca website states. In America and Canada, Autumn is also known as Fall. According to the Dictionary, In the Northern Hemisphere, it is from the September equinox to the December solstice; in the South Hemisphere it is from the March equinox to the June solstice. What do you love the most about the Autumn season? Feel free to comment below; we would love to hear them! You can learn more about Autumn and leaves' colour by clicking on the following links: https://www.telegraph.co.uk//autumn-equinox-2020-what-whe/ https://treecanada.ca/blog/why-do-leaves-change-color/ Visual by Amalia Ocejo Clarence Cansicio and Paulina Angarita #gbcesl #gbc_esl_goes_online #gbceslstudentsuccess #workshopsonline #backtoschool2020 #september #newbeginnings2020 #learningenglish #englishtips #englishworkshops #september2020 #fall #autumn #lovefall
