Congrats to our first years for finishing their first term of theatre school! Throughout term one, our first years had to take their music classes online with our incredible music teacher Stephan Ermel. The final product is an amazing performance of Mr. Blue Sky with the entire ensemble. With a music video to match presented to the school, it was a fantastic end to term one!

Congratulations to our second year students for completing their period study Beyond Borders: The black voice and the language of European theatre in the 18th century. For the past several weeks they have been studying the plays The Way of the World by William Congreve, An Octaroon by Brandon Jacob-Jenkins, The Marriage of Figaro by Pierre Beaumarchais, and An African Cargo by Margaret Busby under the direction of Kwaku Okyere and Jeannette Lambermont-Morey. Additio...nally an Oloudah Equiano creation piece and Phyllis Wheatley creation piece. Second year period study is an integral part of the George Brown Theatre School curriculum. Each year, a new period is chosen based on the class. It teaches the students many skills, especially how to work in rep as you would with companies like the Stratford Festival or the Shaw Festival. This year, the students worked in small groups in person, wearing PPE, and socially distanced in the large Bailie Theatre while live-streaming to the school in order to follow proper COVID-19 restrictions. Congratulations to everyone involved and to all of the students, enjoy a well-deserved break before term two!

Congratulations to the second years for completing their Shaw Scene Study today! For the past few weeks they have been studying the world of George Bernard Shaw and today performed excerpts from his shows Saint Joan, Widowers’ House, The Doctors’ Dilemma, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Pygmalion, and You Never Can Tell. Directed by Jimmy Simon, they performed their amazing scene study over zoom. Great job to all and enjoy your well deserved reading week! #shaw #scenestudy #canadianactors #theatreschool

We are saddened by the news of the passing of Brent Carver. Brent was on our Program Advisory Committee for ten years helping to shape the Theatre program and keep it current with theatre trends. He was a great actor, a lovely man, and a kind soul. He will be missed. https://www.cbc.ca//b-c-s-brent-carver-star-of-broadway-we
Jane Neumier Where I’m from: Langenburg, SK! Favourite Role at GBTS: The joyously deluded Aunt Belise in The Learned Ladies. ... What I am up to: Slowly working through my ginormous pile of books to read, playing a lot of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing, having impromptu solo dance parties, and supervising late-night crazy kitty antics.
Nastasia Pappas-Kemps Where I’m from: Toronto! Favourite role at GBTS: There have been many roles that I have enjoyed at George Brown, and I’m sure that if our school year had ended as planned, Jean in Ionesco’s Rhinoceros would’ve taken the cake. I have had the privilege of delving into Hecuba from Trojan Women (a massive, life changing role), The Skriker in Churchill’s Skriker (another huge undertaking) and numerous other cherished parts. One role, however, keeps swirling a...round in my head: If you’ve ever read Top Girls, the opening dinner party scene has many moving, ridiculous, parts and given absolute freedom, very few lines, and a massive cake, Gret was born. During the dress rehearsal I managed to get my hands on every glass on the table. Opening show? I devoured the entirety of a loaf of bread. A mess of a woman, surrounded by other women, clowning around, making people laugh? That’s my happy place. What I am up to: So many things, for being stuck at home! Cait MacMullin and I just launched just theatre with our inaugural project Click Bait. It’s a multi-media web series about YouTube culture and murder. It’s also funny, I think. I have also been writing a ton. With all this down time, I finally get to revisit the projects I’ve put on the back burner. My cottage comedy Bare was just read by Dandelion Theatre through zoom with a group of fantastic actors, and I have been working on a new play for masque titled David and Beth Discuss Death (and other thunderstorm safety measures) that will hopefully be workshopped on its feet once everything opens up again! Aside from that I’ve picked up embroidery which is my favourite new pastime, though I do think I’m quite awful at it.
After a very strange last few weeks of training, our Class of 2020 finished off their George Brown journeys last month. With no final productions to show them off, we thought we'd do it here instead! Join us over the next few weeks here and on our Instagram page (@gbtscompany) as we feature the incredible George Brown Theatre School Class of 2020 in all their glory.
