How can I tell if it’s time to sharpen? How do I know if there’s something not right? The pictures beside each other are a good example of minor to moderate edge damage, not uncommon in younger skaters, or after aggressive plays with skates to Object other than Ice (OOTI?) contact, or collisions. If they are falling or blowing a tyre in a turn or while accelerating, that is a good indication- but they are also teaching their body to move on ice with equipment while avoi...ding obstacles, at high intensity... so it could be skater input. Not sure? After a skate, wipe your blade/runner down and with light on the edge, look down, pitch back and forth then roll side to side. Look for any areas where the light changes or deflects- if so, you’ve likely got damage that needs correcting. Still not sure? Come by and see us for an Edge check. Why are level blade/runner edges important? Think of standing on your floor. It’s easy, right? Now tilt that floor left or right just a couple of degrees? Ever stood sideways on a hill? As you lean into the slope of the hill, it’s Easy to loose your footing and fall. Uneven edge heights, caused by an off centre ... sharpening wheel to blade/runner, have the very same effect. Turn on the short height, and you’ll be fighting to hold the edge. Trying to carry your speed through a glide, and the tall height with bite more in the ice, making you unbalanced and slow you down because it’s biting more than the short height We use our Sparx Edge Gauge before, AND after each Sharpen to see what’s existing, if it needs correcting, and to confirm the service before handing back to the skater. In the example photo, you can see the bar of the Gauge is clearly rolled to the right. For an edge to be within tolerance, there must not be more than one graduation (.002) between. Clearly, this example before sharpening is well off the mark- so much so (.0045) it’s almost outside of the readable limits.
