Yay!!! First pollen of the season and it’s BLUE!!! Does anyone know what might be in bloom right now with blue pollen?? Our best guess is that the bees have found some Siberian squill flowers in the woodlands in the west end of Ottawa (Carp). The bright blue flowers of Siberian squill are one of the first of the spring-flowering bulbs to brighten up Ontario in early spring.

Since we've been on the topic of 'winter bees', you might be wondering what these special winter bees are doing, mid-winter when there are no flowers. They clearly aren't making honey... Well, unlike other insects, they don't go dormant in the winter. Instead, the winter bees are responsible for keeping the colony warm by shivering their flight muscles. They cluster in a ball, keeping each other and the queen warm, and wait for spring. Over the course of the winter, th...e colony will get smaller and smaller as the bees gradually reach the end of their lifespans, which is 6 months instead of the 6 week lifespan of their summertime sisters. In the late winter, the queen will start laying eggs again, in preparation for spring, and the colony will get bigger once again. To learn more about winter bees and their special role in hive, check out our most recent blog post: https://www.geesbees.ca//winter-bees-how-honeybees-survive

Did you know there are winter bees and summer bees? The ‘winter bees’ are laid by the queen bee in the fall. When they are larva, the winter bees are fed a diet that is scarce in protein (pollen), compared to the summertime bee larva that receive lots of pollen. This pollen-scarce diet causes the winter bees to develop an extra large ‘fat body’ - a special insect tissue that regulates their metabolism and produces vitellogenin, an amazing substance that enhances the bees’ immune system and increases its lifespan. This allows the winter bees to live 6 months instead of 6 weeks. The winter bees sometimes fly out of the hive on mild sunny winter days, like we had today. Unfortunately, they don’t all make it back. That said, bees in the snow are a promising sign of life inside the hive. #winterbees #beefact #honeybees #honey
