Our new Dharma online book club begins Sunday Nov. 15th, 11:00am-12:30pm. We want this to be a relaxed, stress-free study group. Questions for this week: What is the place of compassion in my life? and How does compassion figure in my hierarchy of values?Reflect on this. While we wait for people's books to arrive, here's the video we are all watching for our first week: https://youtu.be/k_gV3voD7MY

Have you wondered about the meaning behind Tibetan Buddhist water bowl offerings? Offering water bowls creates far more merit than simply seeing a holy object. Instead of thinking that the offering bowls contain water, which is how it appears to the human mind, you can create even greater merit by thinking that the offering bowls contain the purest nectar, which is how the offering appears to a buddha. In Tibet, you can put the water that has been offered into a garden or cle...an ground. Because it is blessed water, you can’t put it in a dirty road or somewhere unclean. However, in the West, many houses don’t have gardens. So in this case, the sink where one washes up is the only place it can go, but not in a toilet, which would be very disrespectful. By offering flowers to holy objects this creates the causes to have a beautiful body and to have a holy body that sentient beings never get bored of seeing. By offering incense to holy objects this creates the cause to have pure morality from life to life. Incense is usually better than offering perfume because some perfumes cause attachment to arise. By offering light to holy objects this creates the cause to develop wisdom; it eliminates ignorance. Offering light also creates the cause to have a beautiful body. Offering light is very important because ignorance causes us to suffer in the lower realms. When you see animals, you can generate compassion. Those born in the lower realms continuously suffer and create negative karma day and night. By offering food to holy objects this creates the causes to have a long life, an increase in enjoyments, and immortality. By offering music to holy objects this creates the causes for millions of people to be attracted to the sound of your voice, to have perfect holy speech, and to achieve all the qualities of the holy speech. There is no difference at all between making offerings of water, flowers, incense, light, food, music, etc. to an actual buddha and making offerings to a statue of a buddha.

Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche at dawn on Saka Dawa, 1975 Chenrezig Institute. ~Nick Ribush, photo Happy Saka Dawa! Saka Dawa commemorates three of the Buddha’s major life eventsthe Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana. Each event is considered to multiply the power of actions done on this day, both auspicious and harmful, by one hundred million. Rinpoche clarified that on Saka Dawa, the power of actions is actually multiplied by three hundred million, ...not just one hundred million. During this year’s Saka Dawa, there is also a lunar eclipse. During the actual time of the eclipse, the power of actions is further multiplied by seven hundred thousand, bringing the total multiplying effect of this year’s Saka Dawa to three hundred million seven hundred thousand (300,700,000). For more information on practices, see https://fpmt.org/teachers/zopa/advice/sakadawa/

Today is an auspicious day to put up new prayer flags! Tibetan prayer flags are meant to spread peace, compassion, strength and wisdom via the wind. Each colour represents an element. Blue: symbolizes the sky, or space. White: symbolizes the air and wind Red: you guessed it - fire . Green: stands for water . Yellow: is for earth. Together these elements work together for harmony. Blessings everyone!
