Healthcare recommendations regarding infant circumcision have changed. The most recent scientific research indicates that the long term health benefits of circumcision outweigh the immediate risks of the procedure. This change is a result of two factors: #1 New techniques/advances in performing circumcisions make it very safe and less painful than before. #2 The discovery that men with a foreskin are over 30% more likely to contract HPV (leading to higher cervical cancer r...ates in their female partners), HIV, Herpes and other non-sexually transmitted infections. The decision to circumcise a child is up to the parents, and Medical Associations are now encouraging all physicians to support them, regardless of their choice. It is now recommended that the procedure be available for those who wish to have it. It is certainly an emotional topic for many, and parents are frequently subjected to strong opinions from both sides of the argument. This often leaves them confused and unsure of what to do.
