A brilliant attorney friend of mine told me once about a common mistake in estate planning. Because people are so determined to avoid inheritance taxes, they make decisions that destroy the internal dynamics of the families. Instead of making things easier and more lucrative for their heirs, they sow dysfunction and anger. In the US, fewer than one in 500 deaths result in an inheritance tax, says the IRS. This book would detail how an obsession to avoid the taxman can bring a terrible burden to families and how to fix it.

The greatest and most quiet courtesy the writer can extend for a potential reader comes when they abandon a good idea for a great one.

Books I Would Love To Write. A follow up to the Mother's Day Amnesty. My mom always rents ground floor accommodation. A couple of years ago, I asked why. When she was a little girl, fire destroyed a house around the corner from where my mom lived. Three children, living several stories up, perished. We always thought it was because she was afraid of heights. Then I asked her about the boy she dated before she married my father. His name was Jack Quinn. They courted for sev...eral years in wartime. Poor Jack had a bad heart. When a better field of candidates returned home, she dumped Jack for health reasons, his not hers. The greatest gift you can give your Mom is the gift of listening. Ask her about old boyfriends, about what her childhood was like. Ask her the most important lesson her mother gave her. Ask her about meeting famous people. Ask her what you will need to know most. So many of us can't do that anymore. Ask her three questions. Any three. And if your Mom is gone, ask your children to recite the three most important lessons you bestowed on them. Ask them if they know the stories behind these lessons. If they don't... tell them.
