Boneless Chinook tail filet cooked on a slab of cedar captures the diverse flavors of the west coast in a style brimming with locality. Opening our fish freezer each week is a reminder of the grace shown to us, and how lucky we are to experience the garden of the pacific. #fishingneversleeps #friends #family

The taxidermist said it was the smallest pike he’d ever done. It was the biggest fish I had caught at the time, and watching it eat my spinner remains one of the best fishing memories from my childhood. Riding my bicycle with it carefully wrapped in a grocery bag in my backpack, beaming with PB enthusiasm and soaking wet feet, I feverishly raced home to share the news. My Mother was less than thrilled with the smell of fresh Jackfish blooming into her kitchen, as she watche...d me hurriedly unpack my trophy. Despite her chagrin, she awarded my accomplishment with the offer to mount it for my upcoming 12th birthday. 27 years have passed, along with both parents, but the recognition of this catch and the effort from Mom has always stood out. Because of that, this fish remains as the heavyweight champion of my youth and my most coveted mount. All 1.2lbs of it. #fishingneversleeps #NorthernPike

Icefishing camp hacks vol: 1 the basics 1) Insulated vs non-insulated tents - either of these tents will work, however you will burn less propane heating an insulated tent and will endure colder temperatures. ... 2) Foam floor mat - helps prevent heat loss, and melting of the ice underfoot. A 4x8 foam mat is cheaper, and can be rolled up and transported easier than the interlocking square variety. Install under 3 cot legs, between your cot and holes. Ditch your boots & rock the Crocs. 3) Heater cooking grate - Toast sandwiches, reheat pizza/soup/chili or bake a potato like the photo. Can replace a camp stove. A good friend built this one and gave it to me for Christmas ages ago - a bit of kit I can’t camp without. 4) Headlamp water lantern - wrap your headlamp around a 4L/1gal jug of water for a camp lamp. Two things you’re already bringing that serve dual purposes. 5) Milk Crate - a 20lb propane tank fits snugly inside a milk crate, preventing it from rolling around in transport. During setup, put the crate on its side in your tent open side facing out with your heater on it. Reduces floor melt, and makes a storage spot inside the crate for tackle or thawing bait. *1lb green propane cans get annoying fast. A full 20lb tank and propane hose ensures steady all night heat. 6) Cot tree & nightstand - hang wet outerwear and clothes near the heater to dry. The nightstand (green cot flap attachment) has zippered pockets which are a smart spot to store car/truck keys & cell phones to prevent them from falling down a hole. 7) Speaking of double duty items... install 2-10 bags in a bucket and cut a pool noodle to fit on the lip. Tie one bag closed and remove one bag at a time and place it outside the tent to freeze for easier waste management. Remove pool noodle, and it returns to being a clean trash can. Winter Walleye Can be a real test of your patience! Should we chase numbers, and hope for a big fish or two - or dedicate our efforts to finding one quality fish. Big walleye will haunt you, evade you, piss you off and cause you to question your sanity much like a dandy Whitetail buck. ... Stay the course and keep grinding. Stare at that ice hole long enough, pondering another bait change or a downsize in line. Eventually when it all comes together and you realize - you’ve had enough of their bullshit, and fish pike instead. #walleyefishing #thegrind #icefishing

Pike TipUp tips Vol: 3 Choosing the right bait: Finding bait has proven a challenge for many anglers this season. Due to the pandemic many different baits have been difficult to find. However with some extra effort you can still catch bigs on common and uncommon baits. ... Always keep diesel/gasoline off your hands, gear and bait! Contaminated gloves could also be foiling your efforts with scent transfer to your hands then onto your freshly rigged bait - no bueno! FRESH oily fish produces the most consistent big bites. Mackerel, herring and anchovy are all popular for this reason - high fish oil content. This disperses a scent cloud beneath the ice that lingers around the bait. When a Pike arrives on the scene to investigate, this scent cloud is what keeps their attention while they use their keen eyesight to verify what their nose is telling them. Pic 1 shows a jumbo 9 Mackerel rigged on a sliding quick strike rig with two treble hooks. A bait this size should be laid on a sandy bottom to prevent hanging up on weeds when a fish takes the bait. Look for sandy patches between weedbeds and deploy your big bait in these sand windows. **Disclaimer: Big baits require patience above all else. They will not produce flags like smaller baits. Reserve these bigger baits for good moon phases, heavily pressured areas and known trophy locations. Pic 2 is a Herring rigged on a single hook, with fluorocarbon leader material. Check out @south_on_sunday’s YouTube channel for a tutorial: Secret Bait Rigs, on how to rig this basic setup. The single hook rig makes landing fish easier; no extra hook points to worry about hooking your hands - Pike eyes, gills etc. A circle hook can also be used in a single hook rig. Marinating your bait of choice in one of the available attractants helps to stand out in heavily pressured areas. Brining in non-iodized salt like Pickling Salt, also works - and makes natural bait firmer, and more durable. Before fishing with bait, be sure to check your local fishing regulations for legality! Pike TipUp tips Vol: 2 Christmas Eve Edition Lunar phase and weather: Two significant factors which encourage large Pike to begin hunting their next meal. ... Lunar phase is not just for saltwater species, tides etc. Predatory freshwater fish also relate to the moon, and what phase it’s in. Moon phase is essentially the visible amount of the moon which is illuminated by the sun. On full moons, the moon phase is 100%, on new moons - 0%. Many anglers have identified patterns around specific phases, for a wide array of different species from trout to deer. Fishing for pike through the ice, my experience has been the new moon out-fishes the full moon - specifically around moon transit - when the moon crosses the prime meridian of the location you are fishing. The major bite will be directly correlated to the lunar transit on that day. Without going into too much celestial detail, pay attention to the moon phase when planning your next trophy hunt. Two days prior to the full and new moons are also solid days to target (usually less angler activity as well). Weather can be tricky. A cold front that brings a large pressure change will shut fishing down in a hurry - in spite of lunar phase. Fish will become lethargic, and at times dormant, when temperatures drop and weather patterns abruptly change. Knowing that, the inverse can be killer! If it’s been awfully cold for a week or more, and a warm front moves in - that’s a good time to head to the lake - also easier on your hands, and handling fish. Download any of the lunar apps available, find the dates of the full and new moons, and enter them into your calendar as a reminder. With one full and one new moon a month, you can stack the odds in your favor with solid chances at landing mature fish. #hardwater #pikefishing #icefishing #northernpike @ Southern Alberta
