Hello folks! The most disliked kind of post. Ticks are back Warmer weather is here, and we have seen a few creepy crawlers that we have pulled off and disposed of. ... In our house we use natural prevention, imaged below are Earth MD outdoor shield and The Crazy Dog House EM collars. Not pictured is an essential mix that we spray before every walk. Inside the spray 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 15-20 drops geranium 10-15 drops peppermint 10-15 drops cedarwood 10-15 drops lemongrass 10-15 drops lavender 10-15 drops eucalyptus Rest of bottle filled with distilled water - all oils and the tick powder are bought at Duke's Pet Foods - Outdoor shield does have garlic in the ingredients. I want to emphasize that garlic is SAFE in smaller quantities, it is only Toxic when given in large quantities. I.e: a 40lb dog needs to eat 40 cloves I order for it it be toxic. Why don’t we use chemicals from the vet? Our first reason is we don’t love the concept of adding a pesticide to our dogs systems to kill a tick off when it bites. - did you know using a proper dosage for your dog if the Earth MD powder will also kill ticks when they bite? - The difference between the two is ones harmful to your dog and the other is not. Our second reason is having Australian shepherds they can carry the MDR1 (most herding breeds have this gene) which can react horribly to the vet treatments or over the counter treatments, such as epilepsy. No matter what you use, ticks will still find or attach themselves to your dog. Some get lucky and never have this issue while others are tick magnets. If your dog does get a tick, don’t panic! If you have a tick twister you can remove them with ease and then - I have a jar with 1/3 cup of rubbing alcohol that I put them Into to kill them off. So what ever you do to dispose of the tick is your second step. I will then Spray the wound with colloidal silver to disinfect the area. - There is also a homeopathic called Ledum, this can be used after removing a tick to help fight off any Lyme if there is Lyme traces present. Facts about Lyme: - if a tick carries Lyme they need to be attached for 24+ hours before the Lyme starts to transfer into your dogs blood stream. - Lyme in dogs is very manageable vs in humans where it’s more dangerous Happy spring! oh ps... it’s also mud season
