LISTEN TO YOUR GUT! A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that you can prevent and treat illnesses by maintaining a balance of good bacteria in your gut. Even if you do not have issues with your bowels, having an adequate amount of beneficial gut bacteria promotes health, longevity and lowered disease risk. The key to building a healthy and robust digestive environment is to have a varied diet that includes: FIBRE Plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, whole gr...ains, beans, lentils, peas, nuts and seeds are good sources of fibre. PHYTOCHEMICALS: Found mainly in skin or peel of fruits and vegetable such as apples, broccoli, can carrots. Polyphenols (in plants) help to stop pathogenic bacteria growth and stimulate good bacteria while reducing gut inflammation. PROBIOTICS: Yogurt, Kefir and unpasteurized fermented foods (sauerkraut, kombucha) probiotics provides beneficial bacteria to support gut health. November, or also known as Movember, is dedicated to men’s health and is a month when many men grow moustaches to bring awareness to the cause. Whether it’s mental or physical health, this month we are reminded to take care of ourselves and our bros. During these unprecedented times, stress and anxiety about job security, health and wellbeing may be looming in our minds and it is important to talk about them. Men sometimes don’t feel comfortable reaching out and opening up to... friends and family, but if you feel that someone may need emotional support, try reaching out to them with ALEC, four steps outlined by the Movember organization to foster tough conversations. Ask - If you feel that a friend or family member may be feeling low, ask if they’re ok by using prompts such as You haven’t seemed yourself lately - are you feeling OK? Listen - Put your phone aside and give your friend or family member your full attention. Encourage Action - Help him focus on things that may improve how he feels such as exercising, eating well, or getting enough sleep. Check In - Show you care by checking in after your initial conversation! If you or your bro need additional emotional support, our non-judgmental and highly qualified Mental Health Counsellors are available to chat. You can have private, one-on-one video sessions in the comfort of your own home.1 If you have extended benefits, please check with your provider to see if the session fees can be reimbursed. Sharing is caring As COVID-19 measures have become more restrictive, access to healthcare doesn’t have to be. We’re creating better access to healthcare so that all Canadians can live healthier and happier lives. If someone you know has medical concerns and can’t see their family physician, feel free to call us at the clinic

As we step into the cold and flu season, it is important to support our immune systems so we can stay strong and healthy. Regular, moderate exercise is important to a strong immune system. For example, one small study suggested that regular aerobic exercise can increase the immune response to influenza vaccination in older adults. A high fibre, plant-rich diet can help to support your immune system by helping the growth of beneficial microbes in the gut. Examples include garlic, onions, apples, kombucha, and yogurt with live active cultures1. If you want to learn more about how to support your immune system or have other medical questions, book an appointment with one of our doctors today to receive personalized advice and wellness tips suited to your needs.

Did you know that stress can worsen your existing skin conditions? If you have acne, studies have shown that increased psychological stress has a positive correlation to acne severity1. With many uncertainties in today’s world, and students going back to school, stress levels often increase as a result. Here are a few things our doctors recommend to help tackle acne, one of the most common skin conditions: Tip 1: The way you clean your skin can have a big impact on your acne.... Use a gentle, non-soap facial cleanser no more than twice a day with warm (not hot) water Tip 2: You've heard it before - don't pick or pop your pimples! This can lead to worsening acne, infection and scarring Tip 3: Acne, which can be very stressful for patients of all ages, has many effective treatment options. The sooner treatment is initiated the less risk of developing acne scarring. Speak to one of our physicians about which option will work best for your situation. Want to see a dermatologist? If you’re finding that your acne can’t be kept under control and you’d like to see a dermatologist, our doctors can refer you to one! Book an appointment with one of our doctors today. 3 things to be careful of outdoors Poison ivy: Low-lying leaves that are grouped in threes are distinctive features of poison ivy. When touched, the sap from these leaves can cause rashes and fever. Mosquito bites: To prevent and reduce bites, look for insect repellent containing DEET1. They are most effective against mosquitos and can be used safely with the right concentrations. These details can be found on the Government of Canada website. Or for a more natural alternat...ive, choose products with lemongrass, or ylang ylang essential oils2. Bee and wasp bites: These bites can be very painful and some people can develop allergic reactions. Immediately after a bite, clean the area and apply ice to reduce swelling and pain. If you’ve come in contact with one of these summertime pests, or have other skin concerns that require further medical attention, book an appointment with one of our doctors today!

Ginger for Upset Stomach Ginger used in Asia as a culinary spice for centuries, is also a powerful digestive aid, as it has been thought to ease common stomach problems, including nausea, vomiting, cramps, and irregularity.2,3 Can Ginger Soothe My Upset Stomach?... Your digestive system is an intricate series of organs, designed to break down foods into smaller, more absorb-able pieces of nutrients. This process provides the body with the energy it needs to remain healthy. However, as it is one of the most hardworking systems in your body, your digestive system can easily become overtaxed How Ginger Can Help Your Stomach Upset While there are many causes of digestive upset, ginger has been clinically shown to aid in reducing many of the most common symptoms. 1. Flatulence. Ginger is one root herb that has a carminative effect, which means that it is able to help break up and expel intestinal gas. As such, consuming ginger in any form may help to reduce post-meal gas, bloating, and indigestion.6 2. Irritated Bowels. When the intestines become irritated, many different stomach problems can arise, causing pain and stomach upset. Over time, chronic irritation can become more serious, and lead to a host of problems, including intestinal pain, leaky gut, blood in the stool, and a loss of appetite. One of the most notable qualities of ginger for upset stomach is its ability to reduce irritation, and the associated pain and swelling it can cause.7 The irritation effects of ginger can be attributed to a phytochemical it contains known as gingerol 8 3. Motion Sickness. One of the most well-established uses of ginger for medicinal purposes is its ability to alleviate symptoms of nausea and other common symptoms associated with motion sickness.9 In a systematic review of ginger for nausea and vomiting, ginger was also shown to ease seasickness, morning sickness, postoperative nausea, and chemotherapy-induced nausea.10 Ginger has also been clinically proven to help reduce nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy.11 4. Heartburn and Indigestion. Ginger is known to have a beneficial effect on the Lower Esophageal Sphincter, or LES. If the LES is functioning properly, it helps to prevent stomach acid from traveling back up into the esophagus from the stomach. In one study, just 1 gram of ginger was shown to reduce LES pressure a major trigger of heartburn.12 5. Regularity. Consuming ginger is well known to increase transit time of the gastrointestinal tract. In one study, consuming ginger was shown to stimulate faster waste removal (gastric emptying) in participants with stomach upset. ANY QUESTIONS? DON’T HESITATE TO GIVE OUR DOCTORS A CALL.
