This is the final week for our Holiday Giving Campaign! Please consider giving to this incredible initiative if you are looking for a charitable giving opportunity this season! This year we are partnering with the Canadian Premature Babies’ Foundation (CPBF) COVIDCare program. Having a baby can be an overwhelming experience for first-time parents. It is even more frightening and exhausting having a baby in the NICU. With the cancellation of all in-unit support groups and pro...grams across the country due to COVID-19, there is an extra layer of fear and isolation for premature babies’ parents. COVIDCare is virtual mental health help for parents of premature babies. It is a free online program for individual therapy for families currently in the NICU or those recently discharged (up to 12 months). Families who qualify will receive two online 45-minute therapy sessions conducted by mental health professionals, including clinical psychologists and perinatal mental health specialists. To learn more please visit this link to hear from CPBF Executive Director Fabiana Bacchini and Gluckstein Lawyers' Jan Marin and for information on how to donate! https://www.gluckstein.com/providing-hope-to-families-duri/
Changes to Ontario's Occupiers' Liability Act set out the responsibilities of occupiers of private land and the liability that may flow from the neglect of these responsibilities. The provisions apply to owners and leaseholders of private land and independent contractors employed by occupiers to maintain the premises' condition. The change in the legislation, which received Royal Assent on December 8, 2020, establishes a particular notice period in Ontario in circumstances w...here someone is injured by snow or ice on privately-owned property. The legislation does not set out any means or mechanism of injury by which the notice requirement is triggered the only requirement is that the damage is caused by snow or ice. Therefore, the scope of this notice requirement goes beyond slipping and falling and would presumably apply to injuries caused, for example, by falling snow and ice.
As we navigate our way through the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, we see the number of daily cases reaching new heights and a vaccine that is still months away. In this blog post, Gluckstein Lawyers' client liaison Brenda Agnew examines some interesting trends with expectant mothers’ during the lockdown. Has COVID-19 contributed to a rise in birth injury cases during the lockdown? Why is there a decrease in premature births? https://www.gluckstein.com/covid19-contributing-to-birth-i/
"Growing up in the age of the Internet can be challenging. Young children have always been taught that everyone makes mistakes and that mistakes can be a good thing because they are how we learn. Usually very few people see our mistakes; if they are embarrassing or cause harm to others, the damage is often limited. But when you make a mistake online such as uploading a photo that you later regret taking, or making an inappropriate comment, people all over the world can see it.... Even if it’s deleted, it can live on forever if someone’s saved archive. Adults of course have made these kinds of mistakes too, and some of us have learned that we need to be more careful about what we share on the Internet and with whom we share it. If we use social media to communicate with friends, we may decide to make our accounts private and viewable to only certain people or control which of our friends see certain posts." In this latest blog from Gluckstein Lawyers' David Lackman, he answers the question "Are these privacy tools giving us a false sense of security?" https://www.gluckstein.com/the-over-share-how-social-media/
November 17th is World Prematurity Day. According to the CPBF "The average pregnancy lasts for approximately 37 to 42 weeks. Every baby born before completion of 37 weeks of pregnancy (also called weeks of gestation) is considered as preterm". Premature infants will often spend weeks and months in the hospital overcoming many obstacles attributed to their prematurity. The road can be long and emotional for families of premature infants. WPD is represented by the colour purple..., which stands for sensitivity and exceptionality, and the socksline a clothesline featuring a small pair of purple socks framed by nine full-sized pairs of baby socks symbolizes the 1 in 10 babies born prematurely worldwide. For more information or to make a donation to further research and programming please visit the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation. Our own Jan Marin is on the board of directors for CPBF and we are proud of all the work they are doing to help babies and their families. https://www.cpbf-fbpc.org/world-prematurity-day
Did you know that brain injuries can be both traumatic and non traumatic? Traumatic brain injuries occur through events that happen outside the body such as motor vehicle accidents, assault, shaken baby syndrome and sports injuries. Non traumatic brain injuries can happen as a result of something that has happened inside the body like strokes, overdoses, meningitis, and brain tumors etc. Regardless of how the brain injury happened, the impact of an acquired brain injury for... an individual and their families and friends can be devastating. At Gluckstein Lawyers, we have represented clients who have suffered both traumatic and non traumatic brain injuries and we see first hand the resources and supports that people need when they are going through a devastating time. Read here for an inspirational story about one of our clients Benjamin and how he overcame the odds of ABI https://www.gluckstein.com/overcoming-the-odds-of-abi/
