Bruno was referred to me by a wonderful veterinarian. They couldn’t do a full exam on him because of his extreme fear aggression. Bruno has bitten everyone he’s ever met in Canada. He was rescued off the streets in Texas and has been through one home and one foster since coming to this country. I want to explain to you why I am the first person Bruno has never bitten, in hopes that we can prevent sweet angels like this from being put into stressful situations that for...ce them (yes, you read that correctly) to bite. I did not bring a magic wand with me, nor am I perfect. Yes, I work with dogs for a living, but if you spend time learning about dog psychology, I know that you can help the Brunos in your life right now. This isn’t a prescription that will work with every dog, but hopefully these tips help your dog (and at least prepare you for what to do when you meet a fearful dog in the future.) When you meet a fearful dog, do not talk to them. It scares them even more. Do not make eye contact with them. Direct eye contact is a threat in the dog world. Breathe and act normal. Talk to the owner and follow every last instruction that they give to you. It’s their job to advocate for their dog and as their friend, it is your job to respect their wishes. Do not touch the dog. Just because a dog is brave enough to creep forward to smell you does NOT mean she wants to be petted. Bruno had a great first session. He warmed up very quickly and melted my heart when he began showing his playful side (can you say star and fetching wizard?) His owner learned how to be Bruno’s leader and is already practicing her homework Welcome to my heart, Bruno. Is your dog reactive to other dogs and even certain people while on leash? Don’t panic. When you adopt a new rescue dog, there are often a few issues you’ll need to work through. So, step one: don’t feel badly or judged by onlookers. Odds are that: A)they’ve never owned a new rescue, B) they’re afraid of dogs... C) they’re staring at you to learn how to fix their own dog (who they can’t bring outside to the park because of issues just like yours,) D) they stare at everyone, not only you Before you leave home, pump yourself up so that you can be viewed by your dog as a leader. You CAN do this!!! Stand proud, shoulders back, no tension on your leash (just like in this picture.) There are LOTS of things you can do to improve your relationship with your dog at home to make leash walks easier for both of you. -teach your dog to heel on leash inside your home -teach your dog the place command (this is a transferable skill to the outside world.) That’s what George is doing in this photo -reward calm behaviour -reward eye contact -make rules and boundaries and consistently reinforce them Celebrate the small wins.
