Our coach from Saskatchewan, Karly, wanted to address the reopening of dental practices from the perspective of her province. As they'll be opening again in a c...ouple short days, we wish them all the luck! *** Reopening Dentistry in Saskatchewan On April 23, 2020 the CMHO announced a methodical phased-in approach to reopening Saskatchewan. In the first phase of this slow and responsible reopening Dental Offices. The timing of this reopen plan surprised some people, but not everyone. We are after all healthcare providers and have been trained in Infection Prevention and Control. There will be some things that make the reopening easy, and some that will provide some barriers. The fact that we live in the wide-open prairies; not a densely populated province works in our favour. It is easier to keep distance with a population density of about 2 people per square kilometre vs. 4.8 people per square kilometre in British Columbia or 14 people per square kilometre in Ontario. With 600+ dentists in the province, each office will be taking things in their own time. Procedures have been broken into 2 different classifications: Aerosol-Generating Procedure (AGP): Any dental procedure where aerosolized particles are expected to be generated by dental instrumentation. This includes the use of ultrasonic scalers, high-speed handpieces, surgical handpieces, or air-water syringes at any point in the procedure. These procedures must be completed in an aerosol controlled environment; an operatory room that is isolated rooms from floor to ceiling with an entry or entries that must be closed and secured during the procedure. The PPE required for these procedures is a cap or bonnet, gown or lab coat, properly fit KN95 or N95 Respirators (fit test with documentation of style and size within the last two years) goggles or face shield, gloves (to cover gown or coat cuffs), and gown or barrier for the patient. Non - Aerosol-Generating Procedure (NAGP): Any other dental procedure. For Non-Aerosol Generating Procedures (ie. examinations, hand scaling, simple extractions, orthodontic procedures, crown cementations, etc.) the required PPE is a Level 2 or Level 3 mask, eye protection (glasses/goggles/face shield) and gloves. The two main factors that will prevent all clinics from reopening are the availability of appropriate PPE, and the layout of the physical space in the clinic. The trendy, new open concept clinics likely don’t have the enclosed operatory so they will be scrambling to do some quick renovations, or only completing NAGP for the time being. The College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan is working on purchasing a large amount of N95 masks to help their members return to work, but nothing has been procured as of yet. We are in a good spot right now in Saskatchewan, but if we let our caution drop if we become too comfortable and less cautious, we know that things can happen in 24 hours, we can be looking down a completely different road. We need to remain cautious and flexible in these times and at the same time positive.

We hope that you have been keeping well and staying safe during this difficult time. The Saskatchewan Health Authority and the College of Dental Surgeons have notified us that it is safe for us to reopen our dental office. We have been eagerly anticipating our opportunity to return to work. The health and safety of our patients and dental team is our utmost priority. We greatly appreciate your patience over the past several weeks while we were limite...d to emergency treatment only. We will slowly be returning and look forward to serving our patients to our best ability. We will be reopening on May 4th for emergency and urgent dental care. You will notice some significant changes to our dental office. All patients will be asked to text us at 306-519-3393 or call us at 306-584-2125 when they arrive in the parking lot for their appointment. You will be notified by our reception staff by text or phone when it is time to enter the office and give you further instructions. We ask that only the patient enter the office, no friends or family members. One parent is permitted for our child patients. Please do not enter the building if you have been feeling unwell, have a cough or fever, or have traveled outside the province or country in the past 2 weeks. Walk in patients will not be allowed nor seen that same day. Please phone ahead and schedule an appointment with our receptionist. You will notice changes to the physical appearance of the office. You will also notice that the dentist and staff may be wearing extra personal protective equipment such as gowns and face shields to better protect us. We want to reassure everyone that our office is still a safe place for patients. We have always followed the infection control protocol set out by our professional association. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing everyone soon! See more
